    • A method and apparatus for filtering oxidizable particles from hot synthesis gas or syngas uses a pair of candle filters each having an inlet side for receiving the hot unfiltered syngas to be filtered, and an outlet side for discharging hot filtered syngas. One housing contains both filters or a separate housing is provided for each filter. Each housing has an inlet for receiving hot unfiltered syngas and for supplying the hot unfiltered syngas to each of the filter inlet sides. Each housing also has an outlet for discharging hot filtered syngas from each of the filter outlet sides. Air is supplied to each housing for supplying combustion air alternately to each of the candle filters for burning oxidizable particles trapped on each respective filter to clean each filter while the other filter is filtering the hot unfiltered syngas. One or more switching valves are connected to the combustion air supplies for alternating the supply of combustion air between the candle filters.

    • An insert for insulating the area of the coupling two doublewalled tubing segments of an insulated steam injection tubing string. The insert is mounted to overlie both of a pair of adjacent tubing segment end portions radially inwardly thereof. In accordance with one aspect of the invention, the insert has two walls which are spaced apart and connected at their ends to define an annular space therebetween in which thermal insulation may be provided. In accordance with another aspect of the invention, the insert is engaged to one of the end portions and is spaced from the other of the end portions to prevent flowthrough of vapor and to allow vapor to enter between the insert and coupling and condense to provide an insulating medium.

    • A fuel cell manifold arrangement includes a fuel cell stack and a manifold enclosure connected to and sealed to an inlet side of the fuel cell stack and defining with the stack a gas plenum for receiving a fuel gas for the fuel cell stack. A catalyst screen is connected to the manifold enclosure for defining a gas passage for passing fuel gas and for containing a catalyst that is bounded by the screen. The manifold enclosure has a gas inlet for receiving fuel gas, the gas inlet communicating with the screen for passing fuel gas through the screen and past the catalyst. A plate in the manifold enclosure separates the catalyst from the plenum and heat insulation is on at least part of the manifold enclosure and on at least part of the plate for insulating the manifold enclosure from the fuel cell stack and from an exterior of the manifold enclosure. A passage in the manifold enclosure connects the screen to the plenum for passing fuel gas from the catalyst to the plenum.

    • A heat pipe having an internal cross-sectional area contains a fixed restriction member with a reduced cross-sectional area, positioned in the condenser length of the heat pipe. An evaporatable and condensable fluid partially fills the heat pipe with the remaining volume being occupied by a noncondensable gas which is positioned at least partly around the restriction member. By reducing the internal cross-section area of the heat pipe using the restriction member, the overall length of a practical working heat pipe can be reduced. The cross-sectional area of the restriction member can also be varied for changing the heat exchange characteristics of the heat pipe.
