    • A camera lens actuation apparatus for driving motion of a camera lens supported on a support structure by a suspension system. The apparatus incorporates a subassembly comprising SMA wire connected to at least one mounting member which is mounted to the support structure. At least one pair of lengths of SMA wire are held in tension between the camera lens element and the support structure at respective acute angles to the optical axis applying a tensional force having a component along the optical axis. The lengths of SMA wire in the pair are held at angle as viewed along the optical axis. There may be plural pairs with a balanced arrangement in which the forces generated have no net component perpendicular to the optical axis and generate no net torque around any axis perpendicular to the optical axis. A control circuit controls heating of the SMA wire in response to a measure of its resistance.

    • A loudspeaker comprises the casing (22) of a portable electronic device, having mounted thereon a sound generating element (21) which may be a transparent cover for a display. The sound generating element (21) is driven to generate sound by a piezoelectric actuator (1) extending along a sector of a circle and coupled at one end (7) to the casing (22) by a first block (24) and at the other end (8) to the edge (26) of the sound generating element (21) by a second block (25). The first block (24) and the second block (25) each have stop surfaces spaced apart from each other and capable of engaging each other to limit the amount of relative movement of the ends (7) and (8) of the actuator (1) to prevent damage to the actuator (1). The sound generating element (21), the first and second blocks (24) and (25) and the actuator (1) form an assembly which may be manufactured for subsequent assembly to the casing (22).

    • Described is a hook for hanging articles, such as garments, which is capable of holding the weight of a typical garment while permitting the release of heavier objects. The hook has a base, an arm pivotally mounted to the base, a releasable connecting means for releasably connecting the arm to the base to maintain the arm in a load bearing position, the releasable connecting means (e.g. magnetic means) releasable to permit the arm to move towards a load releasing position when a load having a weight in excess of a predetermined weight is applied to the arm; and effort imparting means (e.g. a weight) mounted to the arm for returning the arm to the load bearing position after the load has been released. Such hooks are particularly useful in schools to reduce the possibility of children being hung from hooks.

    • Apparatus for seaming a container end E to an open end of a container body B, comprises a pad to support the container body, a seaming chuck to support the end E in place on the container body B and cooperating with the pad to hold the container body and end one against the other, and an annular seaming tool having two annular seaming profiles on its inner surface which surrounds the end for progressively folding peripheral portions of the container body and end together to form a seam. The annular seaming tool is mounted on a tool holder and means are provided for supporting and driving the tool holder in orbiting motion such that the axis of the seaming tool follows a circular path around the axis of the seaming chuck. The seaming tool is mounted on the apparatus for free rotation about its axis such that when the seaming profile engages the peripheral portions of the container end, it is free to roll around the end to form the seam progressively.
