    • An autotransfusion system for collecting blood from a patient and reinfusing the blood back into the patient is disclosed. The system includes a collection unit, a manually operable portable suction evacuator removably connected to the collection unit, and a blood reinfusion bag removably connected to the collection unit. The collection unit includes a collection chamber that is oversized relative to the volume of blood that the unit is intended to contain, and an airflow port located and oriented in the collection chamber to prevent blood from leaking into the port when the collection unit is oriented upright or on its side. When connected to the patient, the collection unit and portable suction evacuator are maintained free of blood by enclosing them within a substantially transparent, flexible envelope. The envelope enables the unit and evacuator to be connected and set-up for proper operation while preventing blood from contacting the outer surfaces of the unit and evacuator.

    • An underwater drainage device for removing fluid, blood and gases from the pleural cavity between the lung and the surrounding rib cage of patient. The underwater drainage device includes a collection chamber in fluid communication with the patient, a water seal chamber and a suction chamber. There is a baffled manifold which interconnects and provides fluid communication between the chambers. The collection chamber is removably connected to the manifold to permit emptying and/or testing of the fluid therein. The manometer chamber is also removable to permit changing the amount of suction. There is an anti-flux device which retards liquid flow from the water seal chamber in the event of high negativity at the patient. The device is constructed so that there is minimal fluid loss in the event the device is knocked over and there is a stand and hooks for positioning the underwater drainage device where desired.

    • A control module for regulating the flow of gases in a suction drainage apparatus. The drainage apparatus includes a collection container in communication with a body cavity to receive body fluids (including liquids and gases) therefrom and a suction source for creating a negative pressure within the collection container and removing the gases of the body fluids. The control module includes a serial arrangement of chambers and a plurality of flow control means in a unitary compact structure which fits within a recess provided in the collection container. The control module is adapatable to different sizes and types of collection means and does not add appreciably to the overall size of the device. Baffle means are provided to prevent the loss of the indicator liquid from the air leak indicator means if the device is tipped in any direction.

    • An autotransfusion system for collecting and salvaging blood from a patient's body cavity and for returning it to the patient includes a collection bottle which is detachably connected by an arrangement of ports and an adapter to a source of suction as well as to a conduit from the patient. When the bottle is connected to the system the suction draws the blood into the bottle. When the bottle has been filled and it is desired to return the blood to the patient or for further processing before returning it to the patient the container is easily detached and may be connected to an intravenous delivery set. During reinfusion blood may continue to be collected by the system by replacing the original container with another container. The system may be operated by suction from commonly available fittings in hospital environments or may be connected to a thoracic drainage system to utilize the suction from that system to operate the autotransfusion device. The system may be formed from molded plastic materials and is adapted for disposable one-time use.
