    • Ring pellets for gas generators exhibit optimum reaction rates by having configurations which optimize such rates. The pellet has a central ignition duct; from the latter, outlet channels extend radially toward a rim of the pellet. Specific embodiments contain, on the topside and underside of the pellets, either conical recesses or annular channels or both. The pellets preferably exhibit a proportion of surface area/unit weight of from 4 to 7 cm.sup.2 /g, which can be set by variation of the channels and, respectively, of the recesses to obtain a desired value. The higher this value, the greater the reaction rate. The ring pellets are especially well suited for airbag generators which must display differently high reaction rates on the driver's side and on the front-seat passenger's side, and which are to exhibit at the same time a high breaking and abrasion stability.

    • A rotary power device for use in conjunction with tensioning mechanism of safety devices for the protection of passengers in vehicles and the like. The preferred embodiment disclosed is used for tensioning safety belts of a vehicle passenger restraint system in response to predetermined experienced deceleration such as occur in an accident situation. The rotary power device includes a rotary piston guided in a helically wound guide track such that the piston moves both rotatably and axially in response to compressed gas forces against a pressure face which extends in a plane containing the axis of rotation of the piston. A coupling bushing arrangement is interposed between the piston and the rotating shaft accommodating the safety belt, with axial movement of the piston with respect to the bushing and shaft, and with rotatable locking of the piston and shaft. In preferred embodiments, the rotary locking of the piston and the shaft is initiated only after the release of compressed gases causes an axial shifting of the bushing.

    • A gas generator is provided with a housing which is open at two opposing end faces and a housing wall in which several gas orifices are arranged. The housing is formed as an extruded hollow profile of aluminum or an aluminum alloy. A combustion chamber is accommodated in the housing, in which combustion chamber gas-generating material which is ignitable by means of an ignition unit is accommodated. The combustion gases arising with the ignition of the gas-generating material are cleaned within the housing by filter elements and discharged by means of the gas orifices. The filter elements are supported by holding sections integral with the extruded hollow profile and are inserted by means of one of the open end faces of the extruded hollow profile. In the installed state the filter elements extend in a straight line between the holding sections associated therewith.

    • A gas generator for an air bag, which can be manufactured in an advantageous manner, has at least two tubular pressure tanks wherein materials that release gas are combusted. The pressure tanks are connected radially with a central member containing an igniter element. The gas-releasing material fills up a tubular interior extensively in the form of stackable molded elements adapted to fit within the pressure tank. In most cases, an adequate path for the ignition vapors is constituted by a central channel within each element, while in case of rod-shaped molded elements, such adequate path is represented by the "natural" cavities; additionally, a free surface area should exist between the elements and may be provided by nubs and/or indentations on the lateral faces of these molded elements.

    • A filter device for filtering a gas flow, especially for filtering the gases produced by a gas generator for an impact protection cushion, comprises a filter element exhibiting several filter material plies of varying permeability lying in series in the flow direction. The filter element is fashioned as a wrapped member produced by winding up a length of filter material. The length of filter material has sectionally different filter materials, preferably wire mesh of differing mesh widths and metal fiber mats. A wrapped member is formed by winding up this filter material web, the wrapping plies of which consist of different materials with varying filter effects. This filter element wrap is inserted, for example, in the annular interspace between the two tubes of a double-tube gas generator. Owing to the rising pressure of the gas to be cleaned, the wrapped member is compacted with the consequence that its filtering function is improved.
