    • The invention relates to a digital transmission system having a receiver which includes an equalizer for estimating transmitted binary symbols, from a sequence of sample values (6) of a received signal distorted by a transmission channel, by a reduced-state sequence estimation method or a reduced-state single symbol estimation method (11). To provide a receiver featuring high reliability combined with a clear state reduction of the estimation method, a minimum-phase substitute system (14) distorts the sample values received after received after a known training sequence (27) in the sequence of sample values (6)in the received order, and a maximum-phase substitute system (14) distorts the sample values (6) received before a known training sequence (27) and to be processed in reverse order for forming an estimate (11) for a received signal. The number coefficients of the impulse response which are reduced by the state reduction and used for the estimation, render the estimation inaccurate. When these coefficients transformed in this manner are used for the state reduction, nearly all of the information is used for the estimation. This achieves a high reliability of the sequence estimation as is achieved when all the states are used.

    • A digital transmission system comprising a receiver, the receiver including a receiver input stage and a digital memory for storing a sequence of binary symbols of sample values, formed in the receiver input stage, of a signal distorted by a transmission channel, and an equalizer for forming a sequence of binary estimates from the sample values by an impulse response of a substitute system describing the transmission channel, the impulse response being determined by first correlations of coefficients of a known training sequence with the sample values of a part of the known training sequence extended by at least one binary symbol. To make a channel estimation possible for a higher degree of the impulse response of the transmission channel, and also to carry out the channel estimation always with a maximum quality, a variable first correlation window size and a variable number of first correlations are used for adapting the impulse response of the substitute system to the impulse response of the transmission channel. A reduction of the correlation window size enables more cross-correlation values to be formed with one sequence of sample values, so that an increase of the degree of the impulse response of the estimated transmission channel becomes possible. With a more favorable transmission behavior, the correlation window size can be extended by one or more known binary symbols, so that the quality of the estimate of the impulse response is enhanced.

    • Several subscriber signals are transmitted simultaneously and at the same frequency by a central transmitter to several decentralized receivers which do not cooperate with each other, by digital message transmission in a broadcast channel. A common transmission signal, which enables an error-free individual reception, should be generated with knowledge of all subscriber signals and of the current transmission conditions, by signal preprocessing methods on the transmission side. Known nonlinear precoding methods totally suppress the interference signals, so that the channel diversity cannot be used. In the claimed precoding method, the occurring interference signals are, on the contrary, taken into account. On the basis of a modulo arithmetic calculation, the transmission channel is not totally equalized, but virtually divided, so that the transmission of the subscriber signals is continued periodically; the signals are selected according to the minimal transmission power and pre-equalized, in a linear manner, and the residual interferences, still remaining between the subscriber signals, may assume special values from a preset set of values. The set of values is selected, so that the interference signals of the other subscribers are also merely reflected in the otherwise already existing periodic continuation and can be suppressed or used as required by a modulo decision, on the reception side.
