    • A pivot-chuck actuator has a housing extending along an axis and formed centered on the axis with a piston chamber and a vane chamber offset and separate from the piston chamber. A piston axially displaceable in the piston chamber is axially fixed to a shaft extending from the housing on the axis. A vane element on the shaft angularly subdivides the vane chamber into a pair of angularly offset compartments and formations rotationally couple the vane element to the shaft for joint rotation therewith while permitting relatively axial movement of the vane element and shaft. The compartments cam be alternately pressurized to rotate the vane element and shaft about the axis. A pair of counterweights angularly fixed on the shaft axially flank the vane element. Formations rotationally couple the counterweights to the shaft for joint rotation therewith while permitting relative axial movement of the counterweights and shaft. The housing is further formed with respective counterweight chambers axially flanking the vane chamber and receiving the counterweights. These chambers are filled with oil and the counterweights are formed with angularly throughgoing passages.

    • A chuck has a chuck body rotatable about a main axis and a plate displaceable axially on the body between an outer position and an inner position. Springs urge the plate into the outer position. A locking element on the body can move between a blocking position preventing displacement of the plate from the outer position into the inner position and a freeing position permitting such displacement. A plurality of jaw holders angularly spaced about the axis are fixed axially on the plate and each have radially displaceable outer and inner ends. A piston axially displaceable in the body has cam formations engaging the jaw-holder inner ends for radially displacing the jaw-holder outer ends on axial displacement of the piston.

    • A chuck has a chuck body adapted to be rotated about a chuck axis and a plurality of elongated jaw arms angularly spaced about the axis, pivotal in the chuck body about respective guide axes extending secantally of the chuck axis, and axially slidable in the body. Each jaw arm has a front outer end formed with a generally axially extending and radially inwardly directed outer face and an axially outwardly and forwardly directed inner face extending radially inward from an axially inner end of the outer face. Each outer face converges axially outward with the chuck axis and forms a small acute angle with the chuck axis. Respective jaw inserts each have a pair of faces complementary to and flatly engaging the respective jaw faces. These inserts are releasably secured to the jaw outer ends with the insert faces bearing on the jaw faces. The faces are planar. In addition each insert is formed with at least one throughgoing hole extending substantially parallel to the outer insert face. A screw fastener in the hole has a head bearing on the insert and a shank threaded into the outer end of the respective jaw arm.
