    • A system and method for uniformly distributing fluids (e.g., washing and in-service) through a filter bed of a filter. The system and method of the present invention can be used with any type of filter that uses media to remove impurities from a fluid. The filter bed can include one or more layers of media. The media can be natural (e.g., sand, gravel, anthracite, etc.) or can be fabricated (e.g., plastic). The filter media can be supported by one or more layers of gravel. Alternatively, the filter media can be supported by a porous plate or other support designed to replace the gravel layers. The present invention includes a system having one or more distribution members configured to uniformly distribute a fluid through a filter bed of a filter. Preferably, the one or more distribution members can be readily installed by relatively unskilled labor in both existing filters and new filters. In a preferred embodiment, the one or more distribution members are configured to extend into at least a portion of an underdrain from above the underdrain. In retrofit applications, the preferred design of the one or more distribution members is such that no significant alteration of the distribution chamber, underdrain or fluid velocity is necessary.

    • An apparatus for filtering water and/or wastewater including at least one underdrain lateral having a primary gas chamber and a secondary gas chamber where the secondary gas chamber serves to equalize pressure differences that may occur during the initial distribution due to velocity head changes and friction effects. Preferably, the underdrain lateral includes a plurality of chambers directing a washing fluid into the filter bed where at least one of the plurality of chambers directs a liquid and a gas simultaneously into the filter bed and at least one other chamber of the plurality of chamber directs only one of a liquid and a gas into the filter bed at the same time as that the combination of liquid and gas is directed into the filter bed.

    • A filter system for filtering water and/or wastewater that includes a roughing filter followed by a polishing filter where the roughing filter is an upflow filter and the polishing filter is a membrane filter. The upflow filter includes a filter bed formed from one or more layers of media. The media may be naturally occurring or plastic. Further, the media may be buoyant or non-buoyant. Preferably, the filter system is formed as a package unit. The upflow filter and membrane filter may share a common base allowing the filter system to be readily transported as a single unit. Alternatively, the membrane filter may be connected to and supported by a vertical wall of the upflow filter. The membrane filter may include membrane filter modules that are housed as a group in a section of the membrane filter or the membrane filter modules may be individually housed. The washing liquid used in washing the upflow filter may be discharged from the upflow filter through the same conduit as the upflow effluent generated during filtration. Preferably, the upflow waste line is positioned adjacent the membrane filter drain to allow the upflow waste line and the membrane filter drain to direct liquid to the same storage area or unit through at least one common conduit. The water level of the clearwell is preferably positioned a sufficient distance below the water level of the upflow filter to achieve the desired loading rate across the membrane filter without the need for pumping the upflow effluent into the membrane filter.

    • A filter system employing a modular filter and at least one high rate pre-treatment system for expeditiously and effectively filtering water. The modular filter includes a reservoir housing for containing fluid. A plurality of filter cells are disposed in the reservoir housing for filtering influent passed through the reservoir housing. Each of the plurality of filter cells has at least one layer of media. A moveable backwash assembly is provided for sequentially backwashing the plurality of filter cells. The backwashing procedure is performed on the modular filter system such that while one of the plurality of cells is being backwashed the remaining cells are filtering pre-treated influent processed by the pre-treatment system. The pre-treatment system preferably has a footprint considerably smaller than the footprint of the modular filter. Further, the pre-treatment system preferably includes at least two pre-filters such that when one of the pre-filters is being cleaned the other pre-filter is still directing treated influent to the modular filter for further processing.

    • A method of washing an upflow filter between service runs employs a filter bed having a non-buoyant particulate filter layer through which influent to be filtered is directed in an upward direction, and through which liquid employed in the washing operation is directed in an upflow direction. A two-stage washing operation includes the steps of first directing a combination of air and liquid in an upflow direction through the filter layer with the velocity of the liquid being less than the minimum fluidization velocity of the filter layer, for disrupting only some floc retained in the filter layer during a previous service run, and thereafter directing only liquid in an upflow direction through the filter layer at a velocity less than the minimum fluidization velocity of the filter layer for removing disrupted floc from the filter layer while leaving some floc attached to said particulate media of the filter layer. The process most preferably is carried out with a filter bed including a coarse, particulate media flocculation layer for distributing the flow of influent and promoting flocculation.
