    • A smart coupon-delivery system provides targeted coupons to a user using a criteria-encoded message received from a coupon server. The criteria-encoded message is generated by the coupon server from a behavior-criteria vector that indicates criteria for selecting a recipient of a digital coupon. The system then generates a user-behavior vector to indicate one or more behavior patterns of an end-user, and encodes the user-behavior vector to produce a behavior-encoded message. The system then determines whether the end-user is eligible to receive the digital coupon based on the criteria-encoded message and the behavior-encoded message. If the system determines that the end-user is eligible, the system presents the digital coupon to the end-user.

    • A recommender system can generate a predicted item rating for one user by performing collaborative filtering on item ratings from other users. The recommender system can include a client device that interfaces with a server to obtain a predicted item rating for a local user. The client device can generate a standardized ratings vector for the user, and computes a group identifier for the user based on the standardized ratings vector. The system also generates a noisy ratings vector for the local user, and sends a user-ratings snapshot to a recommendation server that includes the group identifier and the noisy ratings vector. The recommender system can also include the recommendation server that generates a predicted item rating for the user by performing collaborative filtering on ratings vectors from a plurality of other users that belong to the same ratings group.

    • Nanostructured arrays having a metal catalyst (e.g., cobalt) are irradiated with light to initiate the an artificial photosynthetic reaction resulting in the formation of carbon-containing molecules, for example, long chained hydrocarbons or amino acids. A nanostructure having one or more structural elements having a high aspect ratio can formed over a substrate and are placed in contact with water and a carbon-containing source (e.g., carbon dioxide, bicarbonate, methane). When the nanostructure is exposed to light, the water and the carbon-containing source can react to form a molecule having at least two carbon atoms chained together. Structural elements may include a number of metal layers arranged in a patterned configuration so that, upon light irradiation, a greater amount of light energy is concentrated in close proximity to the region where the reaction is catalyzed than for the case without the patterned configuration.

    • Systems and methods for implementing and using nonblocking zero-indirection software transactional memory (NZSTM) are disclosed. NZSTM systems implement object-based software transactional memory that eliminates all levels of indirection except in the uncommon case of a conflict with an unresponsive thread. Shared data is co-located with a header in an NZObject, and is addressable at a fixed offset from the header. Conflicting transactions are requested to abort themselves without being forced to abort. NZObjects are modified in place when there are no conflicts, and when a conflicting transaction acknowledges the abort request. In the uncommon case, NZObjects are inflated to introduce a locator and some levels of indirection, and are restored to their un-inflated form following resolution of the conflict. In some embodiments, transactions are executed using best effort hardware transactional memory if it is available and effective, and software transactional memory if not, yielding a hybrid transactional memory system, NZTM.
