摘要： A method for forming a nanocapillary network comprises dissolving a polyelectrolyte in a solvent to form a solution; electrospinning the solution to extract polyelectrolyte fibers; and organizing the polyelectrolyte fibers into a network. The method can further comprise processing the network to increase the density of the polyelectrolyte fibers in the network. The method can also further comprise processing the network to interconnect polyelectrolyte fibers. A method for forming a proton exchange membrane comprises dissolving a polyelectrolyte in a solvent to form a solution; electrospinning the solution to extract polyelectrolyte fibers; organizing the polyelectrolyte fibers into a network; and impregnating the network with a polymer to fill voids between polyelectrolyte fibers of the network.

摘要： A functionally graded shape memory polymer (SMP) that has a range of transition temperatures that are spatially distributed in a gradient fashion within one single article. The SMP is formed by post-curing a pre-cured glassy SMP in a linear temperature gradient that imposes different vitrification temperature limits at different positions along the gradient. Utilizing indentation-based surface shape memory coupled with optical measurements of photoelastic response, the capability of this material to respond over a wide range of thermal triggers is correlated with the graded glass transition behavior. This new class of SMP offers great potential for such applications as passive temperature sensing and precise control of shape evolution during a thermally triggered shape recovery.

The healing component is selected so as to diffuse into a defect when the area of the product with the defect is subject to a treatment. The components may be selected so that applying heat at a temperature at or above a melting temperature (Tm) and/or a glass transition temperature (Tg) for one or both of the shape memory component and the healing component causes shape memory transition and diffusion by the healing component. The self-healing product can form a coating or material layer to protect a substrate while also providing the healing properties responsive to the treatment.

摘要： Shape memory polymers prepared by copolymerizing two monomers, which each separately produce polymers characterized by different glass transition temperatures in the presence of a difunctional monomer whereby the copolymer formed is cross-linked during the polymerization to form a theremoset network. The transition temperature of the final polymers is adjusted by the ratio of the monomers selected, to from about 20 to about 110° C., while the degree of cross-linking controls the rubbery modulus plateau. The shape memory polymers can be processed as castable formulations in the form of coatings and films. The copolymers are optically transparent and are useful as medical plastics. The invention also relates to the articles of manufacture thereof and methods of the preparation and use thereof.
