The device may be made by assembling at least three layers and membranes for the valves and pumps. The piezoelectric material is actuated by an external voltage source to generate cavitation, which disrupts tissue and/or lyses cells, in particular by a modulated alternative external voltage. The invention further provides a method of disrupting tissue and/or lysing cells in a device comprising the steps: loading a sample and reagents; actuating a piezoelectric material; obtaining disrupted tissue and/or lysed cells; and recovering the eluate. Also provided is a piezoelectric device comprising a piezoelectric material in contact with a second material, and wherein the second material has an uneven surface on an opposite side to that in contact with the piezoelectric material.

    • A method and apparatus are provided for detecting data races that overcome the limitations of the prior art. In some embodiments, this is accomplished by detecting a first access to an object, determining whether the first access is associated with a suspicious pattern, automatically refining a pattern detection granularity from the object to a memory location within the object if a determination is made that the first access is associated with the suspicious pattern, and reporting the data race if a second access associated with the suspicious pattern occurs at the memory location after the pattern detection granularity is refined.

    • The present invention relates to a process for preparing surface-modified colored pigments. The process includes the steps of: preparing a reaction batch comprising a treating agent and a diazotizing agent; adding a colored pigment to the batch; and mixing the colored pigment and the batch under high shear conditions to form a reaction product comprising a surface-modified colored pigment. The treating agent has an organic group which comprises at least one diazotizable group. In a preferred embodiment the diazotizable group comprises a) at least one aromatic group or at least one C1-C20 alkyl group, and b) at least one ionic group, ionizable group, nonionic group, or a mixture thereof. The surface-modified colored pigments prepared by the process of the present invention have been found useful in aqueous or solvent based compositions and particularly in ink jet ink compositions.
