    • This invention relates to a low heat release, low density, fiber-reinforced composite comprising a matrix comprising a thermoplastic polymer selected from the group consisting of polyarylsulfone, polyethersulfone, polyetheretherketone, polyetherketoneketone, a copolycarbonate of 4,4'-thiodiphenol and at least one member of the group consisting of bisphenol A, 9,9-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)fluorene, and 1,1-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-1-phenyl ethane, a copolycarbonate of bisphenol A and 9,9-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)fluorene, 1,1-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-1-phenyl ethane polycarbonate, bisphenol A polycarbonate, and polyetherimide, and from about 10 to about 70 percent by weight of the composite of randomly oriented reinforcing fibers, less than 0.5 inch in length, distributed throughout the matrix. The matrix has a void volume of from about 20 to about 90 percent by volume. The composite has a thermoplastic skin layer on each of the major surfaces thereof. A process for making the composite is also disclosed.

    • The invention is a membrane comprising a dense skin of a polyestercarbonate, wherein the diphenolic residue in the backbone of the polyestercarbonate is a tetrabromo diphenolic residue, wherein the membrane has a separation factor for oxygen and nitrogen of 6.5 or greater at about 24.degree. C. In another aspect, the invention is a method of separating oxygen from a mixture of gases comprising nitrogen and oxygen, wherein the method comprises (a) contacting the gas mixture with a thin, non-porous membrane comprising a polyestercarbonate described hereinbefore under conditions such that the oxygen selectively permeates through the membrane to the other side of the membrane; and (b) removing the permeated oxygen from the other side of the membrane, wherein separation factor for the oxygen and nitrogen is 6.5 or greater at about 24.degree. C. The membranes of this invention demonstrate surprisingly high separation factors for oxygen and nitrogen separations. The membranes of this invention have good mechanical properties and therefore are useful under more extreme conditions, for example temperature and pressure, than many commercially used membranes.

    • Ordered copolyestercarbonate resins having repeating units of the formula: ##STR1## wherein a portion of R.sup.1 is meta-phenylene and a portion of R.sub.1 is para-phenylene and R is independently an aromatic hydrocarbylene or inertly substituted aromatic hydrocarbylene, e.g., ##STR2## exhibit physical properties such as heat resistance, clarity and impact strength that are superior to the comparable properties of corresponding random copolymers. They exhibit melt processability that is superior to the melt processability of corresponding copolyestercarbonates wherein R.sup.1 is entirely para-phenylene. They exhibit heat resistance, notch sensitivity and low temperature impact resistance that are superior to comparable properties of corresponding copolyestercarbonates wherein R.sup.1 is entirely meta-phenylene. Such resins are useful for making transparent tough films and molded articles having high heat resistance.
