    • An ignition circuit IG converts a battery voltage into a high spark plug discharge voltage. A resistor R1 inserted into the power supply path L detects the current flowing through the ignition circuit by converting the current into a voltage, and a level shift circuit LS shifts the potential level at both terminals of the detection resistor. A level deviation detection circuit regulates the level of a deviation voltage developed across the detection resistor, which is caused when an electric current flows from the battery to the ignition circuit, and outputs the deviation voltage. A reference voltage generation portion sets a reference voltage to be compared with the deviation voltage by a comparator COM. A clamping circuit CL suppresses variations in the power supply voltage corresponding to the level deviation detection circuit and the comparator, and protects the level deviation detection circuit. Thus, the influence of a surge voltage exerted on the comparator embodied in a monolithic IC is greatly reduced. Moreover, the accuracy in detecting a load current at the time of engine ignition is enhanced.

    • An ignitor comprises an ignition coil unit mounted to a base and a control unit disposed on the ignition coil unit and electrically connected thereto for controlling a primary current to the ignition coil unit, which includes a base plate attached to the base and a crank angle sensor for detecting the turning angle of an engine crank shaft. The ignitor also comprises a rotary shaft rotatably supported by the base for rotation in synchronization with the rotation of an internal combustion engine which extends through the ignition coil unit and has a distributor rotor on an extended end thereof. The control unit further comprises a power switch package having a mold resin which hermetically molds therein a power transistor and an integrated controlling circuit into a sealed package. The power transistor interrupts an electric current flowing through a primary coil of the ignition coil and an integrated controlling circuit controls the power transistor.

    • A current limiter in an ignition apparatus for an internal combustion engine including a differential amplifier 20 is able to limit a primary winding current of an ignition coil to a prescribed limit value which is independent of a voltage as sensed by a current sensing resistor 11, thus providing a highly stable operating characteristic. The factor of current amplification of the differential amplifier can be increased without accompanying oscillations of the current limiter. The current sensing resistor senses a voltage corresponding to a current flowing from the primary winding of the ignition coil to a power transistor 4 which turns on and off the power supply to the ignition coil. A reference voltage source 12 generates a reference voltage for comparison with the voltage sensed by the current sensing resistor. A differential amplifier absorbs a part of a base current supplied from a storage battery to a base of the power transistor on the basis of a difference between the reference voltage and the voltage sensed by the current sensing resistor. A plurality of output transistors 25, 102 are coupled to form a Darlington circuit which is connected between the differential amplifier and the base of the power transistor. Another reference voltage source 12" may be provided for generating a second reference voltage, the second reference voltage source being connected between the current sensing resistor and the second input terminal of the differential amplifier for supplying thereto a total sum of the voltage sensed by the current sensing resistor and the second reference voltage.

    • An ignition apparatus for an internal combustion engine includes a current limiter for limiting a current supplied from a power source to an ignition coil to a predetermined maximum value irrespective of temperature variations. A current sensing resistor is connected between the power transistor and ground for sensing the magnitude of a primary winding current. A first constant current supply is connected at one end thereof to the base of the power transistor and at the other end to one end of the current sensing resistor through a first transistor. A second constant current supply is connected at one end thereof to the base of the power transistor and at the other end to the other end of the current sensing resistor through a second transistor. A differential amplifier has a first input terminal connected to a junction between the first constant current supply and the first transistor, a second input terminal connected to a junction between the second constant current supply and the second transistor, and an output terminal connected to the base of the power transistor. A temperature coefficient compensator is connected to one of the first and second input terminal of the differential amplifier for compensating for a change in the resistance of the current sensing resistor due to a variation in temperature so that a temperature dependent change in the reference voltage at the first input terminal of the differential amplifier matches a temperature dependent change in the voltage at the second input terminal thereof.
