    • This invention relates to improved crosslinking systems for polymeric dispersions and solutions having suitability for coatings, adhesives and use in many other applications. These systems are based upon crosslinkable polymers having a plurality of activated keto methylene groups, e.g., a beta diketone such as an acetoacetate or a keto cyano methylene functional groups and a crosslinkable component comprising an aldimine. A sufficient amount of the aldimine curing agent is used to effect reaction with the polymer containing the activated keto methylene groups and cure thereof. The improvement in the crosslinking system resides in the utilization of a monoaldimine having only one aldimine group and no other methylene reactive group as a crosslinking agent. Another improvement variation to that previously suggested comprises a redispersible polymer(s) containing activated methylene functionality and combined with the monoaldimine and the use of heterocyclic aldimine.

    • This invention relates to improved water-based polymeric dispersions having suitability for coatings and other applications which are based upon polymers having a plurality of acetoacetate functional groups and a crosslinkable component comprising a plurality of aromatic aldimine. The basic acetoacetate/benzaldimine containing system comprises an aqueous polymeric dispersion wherein the polymer has a plurality of acetoacetate groups and an effective amount of a curing agent having a plurality of benzaldimine functional groups. The improvement in providing for water-stable polymeric dispersions suitable for coatings and other applications comprises an aqueous dispersion comprising a polymeric component preferably derived from a plurality of polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomer units having pendant araldimine or heterocyclic aldimine functionality. Acetoacetate containing monomers generally are used in forming the polymer and a preferred monomer acetoacetoxyethymethacrylate. The polymer incorporating a plurality of benzaldimine functionality generally is formed by emulsion or suspension polymerization and the adimine functionality is benzaldimine.

    • The present invention is directed to improved aqueous dispersions containing polyurethane/vinyl polymers and to a method for making such aqueous polyurethane-vinyl polymer dispersion. The aqueous dispersions comprise a urethane prepolymer having carboxyl functionality therein and a vinyl monomer polymerized therewith. The improvement in these dispersions resides in shelf-stability and self crosslinkability at low temperature with the polyurethanes having the carboxyl functionality in quaternary form and such dispersions containing polymer having pendant epoxide groups. When the aqueous dispersions are cast as a film and the water removed, crosslinking between the carboxyl group and epoxide group occurs.The aqueous polymer dispersion is prepared by(a) forming a carboxy-containing, water-dispersible, isocyanate-terminated polyurethane prepolymer,(b) adding a vinyl monomer mixture which contains a polyethylenically unsaturated monomer to the prepolymer to make a prepolymer/monomer mixture,(c) adding a tertiary amine capable of forming a quaternary ammonium carboxylate to the prepolymer/monomer mixture,(d) dispersing the prepolymer/monomer mixture in water,(e) optionally adding an oil-soluble free radical initiator and a chain extender to the aqueous dispersion,(f) polymerizing the vinyl monomers and competing the chain extension of the prepolymer by heating the aqueous dispersion, and,(g) incorporating a polymer having pendant epoxide groups into the emulsion.

    • An improved two component coating system based upon crosslinkable hydroxy containing polymers and a polyisocyanate crosslinker. The improvement resides in the utilization of a water-borne hydroxy-terminated polyurethane prepolymer/acrylate hybrid, preferably a hydroxy acrylate hybrid, in combination with a water-dispersible polyisocyanate. The two component coating composition can be prepared by:a) forming a carboxy-containing, water-dispersible, isocyanate-terminated polyurethane prepolymer,b) adding at least one acrylic monomer which contains a hydroxy-group to the carboxy-containing, water-dispersible, isocyanate-terminated polyurethane prepolymer to form a prepolymer/monomer mixture,c) adding an alkanolamine to the prepolymer/monomer mixture to introduce hydroxy functionality into the polyurethane prepolymer,d) dispersing the prepolymer/monomer mixture in water,e) adding an oil-soluble free radical initiator and a hydroxy-containing chain extender to the aqueous dispersion,f) polymerizing the acrylic monomers and completing the chain extension of the prepolymer by heating the aqueous dispersion, andg) mixing the resulting hybrid dispersion with a water-dispersible polyisocyanate.
