    • A novel password management device is interposed between a computer and a conventional computer input device such as a keyboard. Passwords are defined at the input device, stored in a preferably encrypted password vault and forwarded to a secure application. When the user is prompted for a password, the device retrieves the password from the vault and provides it to the computer in a manner indistinguishable from conventional data traffic, mitigating the likelihood that the innocuous data stream will be monitored to recover the password. The transmission of a password is push technology and may be enhanced by a gating feature. Automatic password retrieval from the vault is convenient to the user, particularly if the device automatically generates random passwords. No software is installed on the computer; the device is operating system, application and platform independent. The device may be integrated within the input device or within the computer itself.

    • A novel surgical fastener is disclosed for attaching soft tissues (e.g. ligaments, tendons and the like) to bone and bone-like structures. The surgical fastener comprises a shank and an enlarged head disposed on one end of the shank. A central bore passes completely through the fastener along its longitudinal axis, and a plurality of diametrically projecting ribs are disposed along the length of the shank. The foregoing fastener is used to attach soft tissues (e.g. ligaments, tendons and the like) to bone and bone-like structures in the following manner. First, the soft tissue is placed against the bone and then a thin guide wire is passed through the soft tissue and into the bone. A cannulated drill is then loaded coaxially onto the guide wire and is moved down the guide wire and worked on the guide wire so as to form a hole through the soft tissue and into the bone. Next, the cannulated drill is withdrawn from the guide wire and the aforementioned surgical fastener is loaded coaxially onto the guide wire. Then a hollow driver is loaded coaxially onto the guide wire and is used to successively strike the head of the fastener so as to drive the shank of the fastener through the soft tissue and into the bone, with the head of the fastener engaging the soft tissue and captivating it against the bone. Thereafter, the hollow driver is withdrawn from the guide wire, and then the guide wire is removed from the soft tissue and the bone, leaving the soft tissue securely attached to the bone by the surgical fastener.

    • An adjustably expandable suture anchor is provided. The suture anchor includes a pair of members, one of which includes a suture mount, which are configured to be secured together in a selected one of a plurality of positions to cause one of the members to expand by an amount that corresponds to the selected position. In one embodiment, the expandable member is an outer member, and the other member is an inner member which is progressively insertable into an opening in a body of the outer member and securable in the selected position therein. For example, the inner member is threaded into the outer member body or is inserted into the body in ratchet-like fashion. As the inner member is inserted distally into the outer member, an exterior enlargement on the inner member engages a plurality of arms which extend proximally from body, and causes the arms to progressively expand radially outwardly. Because the amount of expansion is adjustable, the suture anchor can be customized to provide the proper amount of fixation for the quality of the bone in which the anchor is installed. For example, when used in relatively soft bone tissue, the suture anchor can be expanded to a greater degree than might be required in harder bone tissue to obtain secure fixation.
