    • An in-line filter is disclosed for filtering fluid flowing through a hydraulic system, particularly an automotive hydraulic system. The filter has a magnetic base with a central opening at its outlet and a seat with a central opening at its inlet. The base and the seat are joined by a cylindrical filter element made of a magnetically susceptible mesh screen material. A spring within the filter element biases a ball against the central opening of the seat normally sealing off the opening and forcing fluid to flow through the filter element to be filtered. If the mesh screen becomes clogged, backpressure forces the ball away from the seat against the bias of the spring to allow fluid to bypass the filter element and flow directly through the filter. Ferrous debris within the fluid flow continues to be captured by attraction to the magnetic base and the magnetized filter element.

    • An apparatus and method for drying condensate from the heat exchanger of a vehicle's air conditioning system after operation in order to thwart odor buildup is provided. The apparatus and method operate regardless of whether the system's blower control circuit is positively or negatively switched. The apparatus includes relays that bypass the normal operating electrical routing to the air conditioning system's blower motor to operate the blower directly. The method comprises determining that the engine of the vehicle has been switched off and that the air conditioning system of the vehicle was in operation prior to the engine being switched off. If the conditions are met, the air conditioning system's blower is operated on a predetermined time schedule to circulate air in the air conditioning system to dry condensate therefrom. In this way, growth of odor-causing fungus and bacteria is inhibited.

    • A combination coolant filter and pressure regulator for an automotive engine's cooling system is configured to be spliced in line with the coolant supply line to the heater core. The filter has a housing and a filter element that is moveable within the housing between a first position opening up communication through the housing and a second position restricting communication through the housing. A spring biases the filter element toward its first position. Normal coolant flow through the housing passes through the filter for removal of entrained contaminants. Under conditions of high coolant flow and thus high pressures, the filter element moves against the bias of the spring toward its second position restricting coolant flow and protecting the heater core from damage due to coolant overpressure.

    • A filter unit for coupling in-line with a transmission fluid line is provided for filtering ferrous and non-ferrous particulate matter from the transmission fluid. The filter unit includes a filter element 21 situated within a casing 12. The filter unit has an annular magnet 26 mounted on an end thereof. In an operational condition, the magnet is seated against an inner surface of the casing. As the filter becomes clogged, the filter element moves to a bypass position unseating the magnet from the casing. Fluid then bypasses the filter element but still flows around the magnet which continues to attract and trap ferrous particulate matter. A ferrous indicator flag 49 may be positioned on the outside of the casing when the filter element is in its operational position and is released and falls away as a visual indication of a clogged filter element in the bypass position.
