    • The invention relates to an improved method of providing customers with indications of whether certain articles, for instance footwear or clothing, will fit that customer and to making recommendations for articles that will fit. The method takes body size data regarding the size/shape of the appropriate body part of the customer and compares the data against a reference body size/shape associated with an article. The reference body size is obtained from the recorded body sizes of previous customers who are known to fit the particular article. A match between the current customer's body size and the reference body size for an article is an indication that such article will fit that customer. The present invention thus avoids any need to obtain any size information about the article itself and can generate the reference body size data through normal retail practices. The invention is particularly applicable to the fitting of shoes.

    • The invention relates to a device and method for communicating with a thermal detector module and an appropriate thermal detector for a use with such a control device. The device for communicating with a thermal detector module comprises a means for providing a collimated beam of thermal infrared radiation and means for modulating the intensity of the collimated beam or thermal infrared radiation. The intensity modulated thermal infrared beam, when directed on to the thermal detector module from a position within the module's field of view, is suitable or triggering a response from the thermal detector module. The intensity modulated thermal infrared beam may also he encoded with a digital signal to control the function of the thermal detector.     • A thermal torch (12) comprises an infrared camera (22) and a visible light emitter (28, 26) arranged so as to illuminate hot objects with visible light. This projection of visible light onto the scene, rather than observing it at infrared wavelengths converted to visible light by a display screen, makes viewing the scene more natural. Applications include medical imaging equipment, night driving systems, stage lights, and security lights. The profile of the beam of visible light can be modulated with a beam profiler (26) which may be a LCD. The infrared camera (22) and visible projector (28,26) may be bore-sighted to facilitate overlying of the visible projected image onto the scene.

    • A focal plane detector adapted to be calibrated using an image of part of the human body. Further, a method of calibrating a focal plane detector having a plurality of detector elements, comprising the steps of presenting a first and a second image to the focal plane detector array, measuring the output from each detector during each first and second image, analysing the outputs and compensating for errors in the output of each detector element such that the outputs from the detector elements are substantially equal when illuminated with electromagnetic radiation of a given intensity. The first and second images have substantially no discernible features therein, and one of the first and second images comprises an image of part of the human body. The apparatus and method are particularly applicable to focal plane detectors sensitive to infrared radiation.
