    • A liquid crystal display, employed in a projector, including a liquid crystal panel using, for example, a TN liquid crystal, having visual angle characteristics that the direction of a visual angle in which the contrast reaches its maximum does not match with the direction of the normal line, and transmitting incident light from an opposing substrate side while modulating the same. The liquid crystal panel can reverse the sides and the top and bottom of an image by reversing the orders of image signal application to the signal lines and scanning signal application to the scanning lines, respectively. Signal input units are formed at two opposing ends of the liquid crystal panel and a mounting means for mounting the liquid crystal display to the projector is formed point symmetry with respect to the center of the liquid crystal panel. As a result, the projector can use the liquid crystal displays of one type in common when images formed by the liquid crystal displays must be reversed left to right and/or upside down with respect to each other.

    • A liquid crystal display panel of the invention includes an active matrix substrate. The active matrix substrate includes: a substrate; a plurality of pixel electrodes for driving a liquid crystal, the pixel electrodes being arranged in rows and columns on the substrate; a plurality of data signal lines for supplying data signals to pixel electrodes of a corresponding column; a plurality of switching devices for electrically connecting each data signal line to the pixel electrodes of the corresponding column; a plurality of scanning signal lines for controlling the switching devices to be conductive; and a plurality of storage capacitances respectively connected to terminals of the switching devices which are connected to the pixel electrodes. Each pixel electrode overlaps a corresponding data signal line with an insulating film interposed therebetween in a first region and overlaps an adjacent data signal line which is connected to pixel electrodes of a neighbor column with the insulating film interposed therebetween in a second region. A first coupling capacitance formed in the first region is substantially equal to a second coupling capacitance formed in the second overlap portion. The active matrix substrate receives the data signals in which polarities are inverted between fields or frames and the polarities are different between the corresponding one and the adjacent one of the data signal lines.

    • The present invention provides a multi-domain type liquid crystal display device with a vertical alignment liquid crystal layer that can get a display operation done without making the viewer sense any unnaturalness and with the decrease in optical transmittance minimized. In the liquid crystal display device of this invention, the liquid crystal layer of each pixel has liquid crystal regions in which liquid crystal molecules tilt in multiple different directions when a voltage is applied between first and second electrodes. Each pixel has an opaque portion arranged on a boundary between the liquid crystal regions. The opaque portion is provided for at least one of the substrates so that when a voltage is applied between the first and second electrodes, the liquid crystal molecules neighboring the boundary will tilt while turning one of their end portions, which is closer to the substrate with the opaque portion, away from the boundary. The opaque portion includes a first shielding layer and a second shielding layer, which overlaps with the first shielding layer with a predetermined gap left between them.
