    • A drop/insert selecting system for an optical transmission system has a decreased circuit scale, by providing a switching unit (4,4') having a plurality of input terminals for receiving a plurality of input channels and a plurality of output terminals, each of the input channels conveying a frame synchronization signal and a channel number. At at least one drop/insert unit (51,52,51',52') is provided for sequentially generating channel preselection signals until a frame synchronization is established and for dropping or inserting necessary signals from or into a corresponding one of the necessary channels incorporated into the drop/insert units when a frame synchronization is established. A channel selecting unit (6,6a,6b) is provided for generating a plurality of channel selecting signals in response to each of the channel preselection signals, each of the channel selecting signals functioning to connect each of the output terminals to one of the plurality of input terminals. The remaining output terminals of the switching unit are connected to through-channels to which no drop/insert units are connected.

    • A communications system has two transmission circuits, each transmitting a multiplexed signal in both ways. A repeating installation used therein selects either one of the two transmission circuits and terminates management information contained in a signal which flows through a transmission circuit selected by the selecting unit. The repeating installation sets the other non-selected transmission circuit to be in a high impedance state. The selection and termination are commonly performed for the two transmission circuits, and the repeating installation further extracts the management information transmitted and outputs the management information to be outputted. The management information includes a section overhead having management information concerning a repeating section of the communications system, and the repeating installation does not terminate management information concerning a multiplex section. One of the two transmission circuits includes a spare transmission circuit.

    • A routing system for a linear ADM having two drop switches, operates to establish paths according to a relatively simple process and to establish paths according to a program that is relatively small in scale and inexpensive to develop. The routing system includes a first selection switch for selecting one of a plurality of channels connected to a first transmission line and for outputting a first signal transmitted through the selected channel. A first selector selectively outputs and inhibits the first signal transmitted from the first selection switch. The first selection switch and the first selector are provided in one of the drop switches. A second selection switch selects one of a plurality of channels connected to a second transmission line and outputs a second signal transmitted through the selected channel. A second selector inhibits the second signal transmitted from the second selection switch when the first selector outputs the first signal, and outputs the second signal when the first selector inhibits the first signal. The second selection switch and the second selector are provided in the other of the drop switches. The first and second signals are selectively transmitted from the first and second selectors to a transmitter/receiver for lower signal levels.
