摘要： An optical functioning component has a tubular housing with a front end side having substantially the same shape as that of a front end of a removable plug housing of an optical connector plug. A rear end side of the tubular housing has a shape configured for connection to the optical connector plug when the plug housing is removed from the optical connector plug. A ferrule is provided on the front end side of the tubular housing and has a mechanism capable of attenuating, cutting-off, reflecting or absorbing a specific wavelength of light. An optical connection sleeve is connected to an end of the ferrule. A frame supports the ferrule and the optical connection sleeve and is mounted in the tubular housing for undergoing axial movement therein by a preselected amount.

摘要： An optical fiber connector has a stop ring having an end portion having an outer periphery and an optical fiber cable having a strength member extending from an end thereof. An adhesive material is disposed over the end portions of the stop ring and the optical fiber cable so that at least a portion of the strength member of the optical fiber cable is embedded in the adhesive material. A heat-shrinkable tube has an inner surface and is disposed on the adhesive material so that the portion of the strength member is disposed between the inner surface of the heat-shrinkable tube and the outer periphery of the stop ring.

摘要： An apparatus and method are disclosed whereby channel waveguides are formed to have substantially circular cross-section shapes to more closely match the circular cross-section shape of a typical optical fiber. Rectangular cross-section channel waveguides are heated to create surface tension between the core and cladding layers resulting in the rectangular shape changing to a substantially circular shape. An over cladding layer may be added to the circular cross-section waveguide. A method is also disclosed whereby monolithic lenses may be formed from the same circular cross-section waveguides on a common substrate, simultaneously, to provide substantially perfectly aligned lenses and waveguides that are not prone to alignment and bonding problems of discrete lenses.

摘要： This invention comprises a multi-mode optical "T"-splitter for the coupling of multi-mode optical fibers to, from, and between other fibers, sources, detectors, and other optical elements, and method of fabricating same. The optical T-splitters of this invention may use tubular waveguides to provide a better match with round fibers, resulting in higher efficiency, lower loss, and other improvements. The optical T-splitter is comprised of waveguides forming a substantially T-shaped geometry in a substrate. A reflecting element is inserted at the junction of the "T" to split input light entering one of the legs of the "T" into light being output between the other two legs of the "T". The "T" configuration of these tubular channels and the insertion of various types of reflecting elements at the "T" junction, make it possible to perform any number of optical functions, including splitting, tapping, mixing, and coupling. The optical splitter of this invention is relatively easy to manufacture, is inexpensive, and exhibits low propagation and coupling loss.

摘要： An integrated optical device includes a substrate; a single-mode optical waveguide having a cladding layer disposed on the substrate and a core portion embedded in the cladding layer for transmitting light therethrough; and a stress applying film disposed on a desired portion of the cladding layer for adjusting stress-induced birefringence of the single-mode optical waveguide by irreversibly changing the stress exerted on the core portion by a trimming technique. The integrated optical device can be manufactured by the steps of forming a cladding layer on a substrate; forming a single-mode optical waveguide having a core portion embedded in the cladding layer for transmitting light therethrough; and forming, on the cladding layer, a stress applying film for exerting a stress on the single-mode optical waveguide to irreversibly change the stress by trimming the film. The device exhibits a precisely adjusted birefringence and a desired polarization dependence or independence, and is effective for constructing an integrated optical device for optical communication, for optical sensing, or for optical signal processing, in which the polarization characteristics play an important role.

The device has a cutting depth limiting surface disposed on a receiver body and a cutting blade attached between a pusher body and a fixing block. The cutting blade is made from plastics and has a specified bending elasticity. An optical fiber is inserted between the cutting blade and the limiting surface. During operation, the cutting blade cuts into a covering on the optical fiber. A high precision in arranging the cutting blade is not required.

摘要： In a light waveguide circuit including a plurality of waveguides having different length, a material (10) having a temperature coefficient of a refractive index including a symbol different from that of a temperature coefficient of an effective refractive index of the waveguide (4) is charged into a groove (12) formed by removing the upper clad and the core from the waveguide (4), or a groove (12) formed by removing the upper clad, the core and the lower clad from the waveguide (4). A difference in length of the removed portions between adjacent waveguides is proportional to a difference in length of the waveguides which were not removed and remained.
