    • A method of aligning a liquid crystal includes a step of fixing on a hot plate and heating a liquid crystal cell in which a liquid crystal composed of a ferroelectric liquid crystal material sealed between electrode substrates respectively having alignment films having applied thereto a uniaxial alignment by rubbing. According to the described method, a pressure is applied to the liquid crystal cell by a roller, and a portion subjected to an application of pressure is moved by moving the roller. Further, the liquid crystal is heated within a temperature range between a phase transition temperature of SmA phase SmC* phase and a temperature 10° C. below the phase transition temperature, and the portion subjected to an application of pressure is moved in the same direction as the rubbing direction, thereby achieving the C2 orientation at higher yield. Within the described temperature range, by moving the portion in an opposite direction to the rubbing direction, a C2 orientation can be always achieved at high yield (almost 100%). As a result, the C2 orientation can be surely achieved in the liquid crystal display element with ease.

    • In cases where the amount of gradation transition is greater than a threshold value, a modulation processing section corrects image data D of a current frame by making an interpolation calculation with reference to a look-up table, and output the image data D thus corrected. With this, an image display apparatus is realized which can be balanced between a reduction in circuit size and an improvement in display quality at a higher level.

    • An evaluation apparatus of a liquid crystal display device in accordance with the present invention is provided with a signal section for supplying a signal to a liquid crystal panel to be evaluated; a display detection section for sensing a display state on the liquid crystal panel; an analysis section for analyzing a detection result of the display detection section. The signal section supplies to the liquid crystal panel a signal corresponding to an original tone and then, in accordance with tone transition from the original tone to an attainment tone, either (i) an overshoot test signal or (ii) both an overshoot test signal and an undershoot test signal in test driving, while sweeping either a level of the signal (i) or levels of both the signals (ii). The analysis section analyzes detection results of the display detection section obtained in the test driving and stores in association with the original tone and the attainment tone, a level of the test signal that corresponds to an optimum one of the detection results. With this, it is possible to easily and highly accurately obtain an optimum level of the overshoot signal or the undershoot signal for the liquid crystal panel to be evaluated.
