    • An audio stream is analyzed to distinguish silent periods from non-silent periods and an encoded bitstream is generated for the audio stream, wherein the silent periods are represented by one or more sets of canned encoded data corresponding to representative silent periods. In a preferred embodiment, one of the sets of canned encoded data is randomly selected for each silent period. There may be different sets of silent periods corresponding to different types of silent periods, where a particular type of silent period is selected based on some characteristic of the audio stream (e.g., energy level of the silent periods). In addition, the sets of encoded data may be generated from actual silent periods of the audio stream.

    • A method of processing materials at multiple work sites that prevents contamination of the atmosphere. The method includes providing a plurality of work sites containing workpieces, positioning a track connecting the sites, providing a mobile system comprising an enclosure and a treatment system in communication with a space enclosed by the enclosure, moving the mobile system so that the enclosure surrounds the workpieces on the first site, processing those workpieces, moving the mobile system along the track as a single unit onto a second work site, and processing those workpieces on the second site. The enclosure may be readily openable at opposing portions facing the track to enable the enclosure to pass over workpieces on the plurality of work sites. Additionally, a method of constructing an operation for processing workpieces is provided.

    • A method and apparatus for video conferencing is disclosed. According to one embodiment, a Universal Serial Bus (USB) enabled digital video camera may output an encoded information stream. The USB-enabled digital video camera including an encoder may compress image data received by the USB-enabled digital video camera during a real-time video conference to produce the encoded information stream in which no frame of the encoded information stream may depend on a previous frame by performing intra frame encoding. A computer system coupled to the USB-enabled digital video camera via a USB may be used to decode the encoded information stream and to transmit the image data to one or more other computer systems as part of a video conferencing data stream.

    • A system and method for arbitrating among memory requests. According to a preferred embodiment, the system comprises a global memory and a plurality of datapaths. Each datapath comprises a datapath processor for executing instructions of an instruction sequence and for providing a plurality of memory request signal types in accordance with the instructions, wherein the plurality of memory request signal types comprises instruction memory request signals, scalar memory request signals, first-in and first-out memory request signals, statistical decoder memory request signals, and block transfer memory request signals. Each datapath also comprises local memory, a global port for transferring data between the local memory and the global memory, and a dual port comprising first and second local ports for transferring data between the local memory and the datapath processor, wherein the first and second local ports permit simultaneous transfer of data between the local memory and the datapath processor. The system comprises a data bus coupled to the global memory for transferring data to and from the global memory, and a transfer controller for controlling block transfer and scalar data transfers between the local memory and the global memory over the data bus and for arbitrating among competing datapaths of the plurality of datapaths to grant to a selected datapath access to the data bus in accordance with the signal types of the memory request signals generated by datapaths of the plurality of datapaths.
