    • An introducer adapted to facilitate positioning of a catheter, such as an intrauterine catheter, is provided. The introducer includes an elongate member having an outer wall defining a longitudinal axis and a longitudinal lumen for reception of a catheter, e.g., an intrauterine catheter. The outer wall includes first and second longitudinal edges defining a longitudinal slot in communication with the longitudinal lumen. The outer wall has a cross-section orthogonal to the longitudinal axis and defining a thickness at an opposed location generally opposing the longitudinal slot greater than a thickness at edge locations adjacent the first and second longitudinal edges, to thereby permit the first and second longitudinal edges to be displaced relative to each other to increase a dimension of the longitudinal slot to facilitate one of removal or insertion of the catheter via the longitudinal slot and relative to the longitudinal lumen. The thickness of the outer wall may be dimensioned to gradually decrease from the opposed location to the edge locations. The ratio of the thickness of the outer wall at the opposed location to the thickness of the outer wall at the edge locations is about 2:1. The outer wall may define a generally c-shaped cross-section.

    • An aspiration instrument includes a compliant protective guard for minimizing injury to internal organs and other soft tissue while removing fluids from the body cavity. The compliant protective guard may be constructed from foam, plastic or other like material, including polyethylene and polypropylene. A preferred embodiment of the protective guard takes the shape of a bell. The compliant guard may be connected with the aspiration instrument using adhesives, such as glue or epoxy, or with a snap or friction fit. The compliant guard may define a single opening in fluid communication with the yankauer. The compliant guard may also define a plurality of openings for removing fluids from the body.

    • A patient positioning apparatus includes a support member adapted for positioning beneath a patient and having an expandable material therein. The expandable material is adapted for transition from a first initial condition to a second expanded condition in the presence of an activating agent to facilitate support and stabilization of the body part with the support member and performance of a medical procedure. The expandable material may be a foamable liquid adapted to expand when subjected to the activating agent such as a propellant gas, air or foaming agent. In one application, the foamable liquid is a polyurethane.
