    • An elongated tubular structure, of non-stretchable material preferably comprising impermeable-to-gas thin metal having: flat, wider, sealed ends; and intermediate, elongated links, each of which has a hollow portion, inflated with gas at a pressure well above that of the atmosphere, and a wider, bonded, flattened-tube band at each link end. Each flat, tubular-structure end comprises a welded, vulcanized or otherwise bonded, sealed joint between two flat sides of the structure and an outer-end means for attachment of this end to a similar portion at the other end and/or to adjoining structure (an end flange, optionally having bolt or rivet holes). Adjacent inflated links are preferably joined by a flatter, wider portion that preferably allows passage of gas between links and inflation of all the links from a single gas inlet, permanently sealed after inflation. The disclosure also comprises a strongly rigid or very stiffly resilient vehicular body (strongly protecting a load in a crash) and stiffly resilient shock-taking means, yieldable without fracture under major shock, comprising tubular structure of the above type.

    • A vehicle tire casing and inner inflated tubular member of material comprising lead (or optionally other highly malleable metal having high ductility in the range of that of lead and copper, and substantially pure aluminum and tin). Lead, which may be flexed many thousands of times without fracture, is resistant to puncture and may be welded by simple heating without flux, is preferred; when copper, aluminum or tin is used the tubular member is sheathed in and flexibly bonded to a thin-rubber envelope. The invention comprehends a doughnut-shaped lead inner tube; but optionally the tubular member comprises annularly arranged tubular elements, each having a middle portion of greatest inflated bulge, from which portions curvingly slope to wider constrictions at ends of the elements. These constrictions may be: flattened, hermetically bonded plies of the tubularmember material; or only substantially flat, having lines of seam or spot welding, allowing passage of gas between the welds. The invention includes a wheel, having laterally projecting flanges, inward of which casing flanges are held.

    • A life buoy, anchored buoy, or similar article of manufacture having at least one tube containing pressurized gaseous material within a strength-providing waterproof envelope, and preferably comprising foam plastic between the envelope and portions of the tube. When only one tube is used it optionally may be doughnutshaped as in FIGS. 4 to 8 or helically wound as in FIG. 2. When the tubular means comprises two or more tubes they may be concentric as in FIG. 1. Optionally there may be fixed at the center of the tubular means a strength-providing cylinder, openended or closed at one or both ends, or a sealed compartment, or a sphere. The compartment optionally may contain survival materials (in a life buoy) or a wave motor, electric generator and battery (in an anchored buoy having an electric light, bell, horn or the like).

    • A building construction member, comprising: at least one row of cans held between opposite channels of mesh or apertured sheet metal; and light-weight concrete or foam plastic encompassing the cans and channels. The cans and channels may be assembled into a plural-sided construction member by interlocking adjacent ends of the channels by means of flanges, spread slightly apart to go over row-end cans and channel ends at corners, with use of screws and bonding material. FIGS. 14 to 19 illustrate the construction member as a door or window frame.     • A connecting device for connecting a member such as a shaft to another member in surrounding relation thereto in which the shaft is formed with an annular groove in which a split metal ring formed of spring wire is mounted. The shaft carries an actuating member for expanding the wire ring whereby the wire ring will grippingly engage the surrounding member. When the groove is formed in separable members, the groove can be smaller at the radially outer, open, side than inwardly therefrom whereby a split wire ring placed in the groove will be captive therein.

    • A boat, adapted for travel over water, comprising floats, and walls that comprise curved, joined-together rows of parallelaxes, thin-metal, cylindrical or corrugated cans, fastened by bonding material and optional screws between strips of mesh or pipe strap, and optionally sheathed in V-shaped strips or masses of foam plastic or other insulation, between the cans and vehicle skin means. Four such rows, extending longitudinally of the vehicle, may be end-joined at four corners by overlapping ends of the mesh or pipe strap in each of a plurality of elongated loops, forming the framework of the upright walls. These are surmounted by a top that may be substantially flat or airfoil-shaped, comprising curved can-rows that may extend longitudinally of the vehicle, oppositely curved in opposite halves of the top. The sidewall rows are fixed at the bottom of the vehicle''s sidewalls to curved deck rows that are similar to the roof rows. And to the deck of these rows (comprising a sheet of tough rubber, other plastic or plywood over the deck cans) a lower, vehicle-driving and main-float part is strongly attached along a central portion of the vehicle. This part preferably comprises upright pairs of curved, parallel-axes, fore-and-aft-arranged can rows, each pair joined at their lower ends by a straight, transversely extending row. Within this inclined, narrowly-flat-bottomed part, which provides headroom for walking along most of the boat''s length, ladders and motive means for driving the rear propeller are mounted. Vertical rows of parallel-axes, shock-absorbing, buffer cans preferably extend below the main deck, forming rolllimiting, outrigger floats. The boat is preferably somewhat stabilized by balloons at its top; and if the balloons are large enough (with airfoil-shaped top and with or without small wings jutting thru the sidewalls) the vehicle may be a flying boat. The balloons are preferably in fore-and-aft-extending rows, with a gap in at least one row for a hatchway from the top.
