    • Particulate magnesium oxide prepared by calcining magnesium oxide at between about 1100.degree. C. and about 1500.degree. C. At least about 80% of the magnesium oxide particles are between about 150 microns to about 400 microns in diameter. This magnesium oxide is capable of producing expansion in set cements when the temperature thereof is at least about 60.degree. C. Preferably the magnesium oxide has been calcined at between about 1100.degree. C. to about 1300.degree. C. for about 1 to about 3 hours, and at least about 80% of the particles are between about 200 microns to about 325 microns. Further, the BET surface area of the particles is preferably between about 0.8 to about 1.8 m.sup.2 /g, and the acid neutralization time (using the method described) is between about 15 to 20 minutes, and further preferably between about 17 to about 25 minutes. Expandable cement compositions using such magnesium oxide, and a method of using them in cementing of wells, are also disclosed.

    • In a specific application the apparatus of this invention is used to measure the density of cement slurries employed in oil well cementing operations. As the slurry stream is pumped to the bore hole it is split into two parts. One part of the stream is sent through a curved conduit section which is positioned horizontally. The remaining part of the stream travels through a curved conduit section which is in a vertical position. The slurry flow in the vertical conduit sets up a hydrostatic pressure differential between the streams. This pressure difference, which is sensed by a differential pressure indicator, is read directly as units of density on the indicator scale.

    • An apparatus is disclosed which is useful for measuring the expansion properties of semi-solid materials which expand to a solid phase, upon curing, such as cement compositions. The apparatus includes a sleeve, preferably cylindrical, which has a vertical slit on one side, to allow the sleeve to expand. Mounted on the outside of the sleeve are several sets of pins, consisting of two pins each. The two pins in each set are located on opposite sides of the slit. In the test procedure, the sleeve is filled with wet cement, which is then cured to a solid. As the cement cures it causes the sleeve to expand. The actual expansion of the sleeve represents an expansion factor for the cement. This factor is calculated by measuring the distance across the pins of each set, when the sleeve is empty, and again after the cured cement expands the sleeve.
