    • Novel latex or emulsion compositions containing internally plasticizing and crosslinkable long-chain alkenol ester monomers are disclosed and claimed. Preferred embodiments include latex formed from acrylate or methacrylate esters of long-chain alkenols. A process for the synthesis of the latex composition is also disclosed, which involves (a) esterification of a long-chain alkenol with an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid; (b) polymerization of the ethylenically unsaturated ester in an aqueous phase with at least one other copolymerizable monomer; and (b) blending of so formed polymer with at least one drier and a surfactant to form the novel latex or emulsion compositions. These compositions form films at low minimum film forming temperatures (MFT) ranging from -5 to 10.degree. C. and cure to above ambient glass transition (T.sub.g) polymers without the use of traditional organic cosolvents which contribute to environmental pollution via volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emissions. These compositions are therefore useful in waterborne coatings, contact and pressure sensitive adhesives, and inks.

    • Novel organosilane derivatized long-chain compounds containing halosilane and hydroxysilane groups are disclosed and claimed. A process for the syntheses of these novel compositions is also disclosed, which involves simple one-pot hydrosilylation reaction of substituted halosilanes with substituted long-chain olefinic compounds, and subsequent hydrolysis to form surface active silanol derivatives. Preferred embodiments include organosilane derivatives of fatty acids derived from tung oil, high erucic acid rape seed oil, and linseed oil. These compositions feature high surface activity in forming stable organic/water emulsions of various difficultly emulsifiable materials as compared with conventional emulsifying agents. These compositions are useful as reactive-dispersants, defoamers, reactive-surfactants in emulsion polymerization, crosslinkers, film formers, gloss enhancers, anticorrosive additives, adhesion promoters and as general property enhancers in coatings, adhesives and inks. These compositions contribute zero volatile organic components (VOC) to these formulations.

    • Novel powder coating compositions containing reactive hyperbranched polymers are disclosed and claimed. Preferred embodiments include powder coating compositions formed from hyperbranched polyesters having terminal hydroxy, carboxy, epoxy, and isocyanate groups. Preferred hyperbranched polyesters are formed from .alpha.,.alpha.-bis-(hydroxymethyl)-propionic acid, which act either as crosslinkers, adhesion promotors, or flow and leveling agents. A process for the synthesis of powder coating compositions is also disclosed which involves (a) self condensation of one or more of the multifunctional monomers to form the hyperbranched polymer, optionally, in the presence of suitable reactive end-capping moieties which are described herein; (b) melt blending of the hyperbranched polymer with suitable amounts of one or more of polyesters, epoxy resins, blocked urethane resins, or acrylic resins, a crosslinker, and one or more of suitable additional ingredients including degassers or flow and leveling agents, to form a flake; and (c) grinding and sieving of the flake to form the powder coating composition. These compositions exhibit improved flow and curing properties. These compositions can therefore be formed into thin films and can be cured at low temperatures to form smooth surfaces. Additionally, these films are hard and exhibit enhanced impact resistance properties than the conventional polyester resins. Thus, these powder coating compositions find utilities in automotive, packaging, and appliances.
