    • A receptacle that is configured to receive connectors of different types. If a connector of one type is received into the receptacle, the connector contacts engage one set of receptacle contacts. If a connector of another type is received into the receptacle, the connector contacts engage another set of receptacle contacts, and so forth for potentially other connector types and other contact sets. A communication system may also control which PHY circuitry communicates with the receptacle depending on which connector type is plugged into the receptacle. The receptacle can include a connector detection mechanism configured to detect whether a connector of the first type or second type is inserted into the receptacle. Circuitry and pin design of the receptacle also depends on the first and second connector types.

    • A PCB is provided that is suitable for use in applications where EMI control is of interest. The PCB includes circuitry that communicates with an edge connector having edge traces located on its surface. Additionally, embedded traces are disposed within the dielectric material of the PCB, and each embedded trace electrically connects an edge trace with a corresponding median trace located on a surface of the PCB. An embedded ground layer substantially disposed within the dielectric material defines an area within the dielectric material through which the embedded traces pass. Finally, one or more vias are provided that extend through the dielectric material of the PCB and are filled with a conductive material. The vias are electrically connected to the embedded ground layer and configured to electrically communicate with an associated module. In this way, a structure is implemented that facilitates control of electromagnetic radiation emitted by the PCB circuitry.

    • An optical transceiver module characterized by reduced electromagnetic interference (“EMI”) emissions for improved operation is disclosed. The transceiver includes a housing formed by top and bottom housing portions that are joined to define a cavity. A printed circuit board (“PCB”) is positioned within the cavity and includes an edge connector extending from one housing end. The PCB also includes two holes defined near the edge connector and lined with electrically conductive material. Conductive plates located on both the top and bottom housing portions electrically connect with the conductive holes to electrically interconnect the top and bottom housing portions. Two posts on the top housing portion are received into the conductive holes to align the PCB with the housing portions. A chassis ground from one or both of the housing portions extends through the plates and holes to create a “chassis ground fence,” preventing EMI emission from within the transceiver cavity.

    • An electronic module is provided that includes a housing having electrically conductive top and bottom housing portions in substantial contact with each other and cooperating with each other to define an opening. A printed circuit board is disposed within the housing and includes an edge connector at least partially extending through the opening in the housing. The printed circuit board also defines a non-conductive through opening configured and arranged so that the housing portions contact each other by way of the through opening. In this way, the housing portions cooperate to subdivide the opening defined by the housing into at least two relatively smaller openings that, as a result of their relatively small size, facilitate containment of electromagnetic emissions generated by the electronic module.

    • A shield element for reducing electromagnetic interference (“EMI”) in an optical transceiver module assembly. The transceiver module assembly includes an optical transceiver received within a cage. The cage mounts to a host board and receives in one end thereof a right angle connector of the host board. A rear end of the optical transceiver includes an edge connector that electrically interfaces with a receptacle of the right angle connector. An EMI shield element is interposed between the rear end of the optical transceiver and the right angle connector. The EMI shield element includes a base that surrounds a portion of the right angle connector. Wall portions upwardly extend from the base around the right angle connector to form an angled shield seating surface that engages with a complementarily angled seating surface on the transceiver rear end, thereby forming an EMI shield when the optical transceiver is received into the cage.
