    • A system and method for reduced standby power consumption in a display device. In one embodiment, a circuit for power mode switching between a main mode and a standby mode of a display device is provided. In this embodiment, the circuit comprises a power supply unit coupled to a power source for receiving an input power signal and for generating output power signals when the display device is in the main mode. The circuit also includes an opto coupler coupled to a computer and responsive to a sync signal therefrom. The opto coupler is also coupled to the power supply unit for selectively sending an OFF signal thereto when the opto coupler does not detect the sync signal from the computer. Moreover, in this embodiment, the power supply unit shuts down and stops generating the output power signals in response to the OFF signal, thereby switching the display device to the standby mode. Thus, in this embodiment, no switching loss is incurred by the power supply unit and the standby power consumption of the circuit is minimized. In one embodiment, the power supply of a display device implemented in accordance with the present invention dissipates less than 1 watt of power during standby mode.

    • A system and method for reduced standby power consumption in a display device.     • A system and method for reducing power consumption in a digital display device in standby mode. The display device receives a voltage from a secondary power source in main mode but not in standby mode. An opto-coupler detects the voltage from the secondary power source. An integrated circuit that controls power to the display device is powered on in response to the opto-coupler detecting the voltage, and is otherwise powered off. The display device switches to main mode when the secondary power source is detected and to the standby mode when it is not. With use of the opto-coupler, it is not necessary for components of the display device to remain powered on in standby mode in order to detect the secondary power source and switch to main mode. Consequently, the digital display device consumes less than one watt of power in the standby power mode.

    • A method and system for allowing a power supply circuit to limit inrush current and to use a small current specification switch. The power supply circuit comprises a transformer that receives a power signal from a primary circuit and supplies power of a selected voltage to a secondary circuit, to which a load is coupled. The primary circuit comprises a rectifier for providing a rectified power signal to the transformer, a power supply controller for controlling the transformer, and a small current specification switch coupled between a kick resistor and the power supply controller, where the kick resistor functions to activate the power supply controller when the circuit is first turned on. By coupling the switch between the kick resistor and the power supply controller, the present invention not only utilizes the high impedance kick resistor to limit inrush current through the switch so that the switch can have a small current specification, but also ensures that current to the power supply controller is cut off when the switch is open. Thus, when the load is powered off with the switch open, no wattage is dissipated by the power supply controller either and total power consumption of the circuit is thereby minimized. The primary circuit optionally comprises a voltage limiter coupled to protect the power supply controller. Additionally, the primary circuit optionally comprises an impedance element coupled to further limit inrush current.
