    • The specification discloses an automated apparatus and method for packaging surgical needles having sutures attached thereto wherein a bundle of needles and sutures are placed at a semi-automated separation station and an operator feeds the needles, one at a time, into a rotating needle feed wheel. As the feed wheel advances, the suture is tensioned and directed along a pre-determined path to separate it from the remaining sutures in the bundle. The apparatus has a plurality of individually rotatable tool nests which are sequentially spaced on a rotating or indexing turntable. These tool nests sequentially receive plastic packages for receiving the needle and suture at a first station. At a second station, a needle is inserted into the package by robotic fingers which have retrieved the needle and attached suture from the rotating needle feed wheel. The rotating needle feed wheel and the rotating tool nests are synchronized to step together as each advances. At a third station, the package and needle are rotated to tension the suture and position the package and the suture for automatic winding of the suture into the package. At a fourth station, the rotatable tool nest is rapidly rotated to wind the suture into a circumferential channel in the package which surrounds the needle.

    • A face-and-bypass heating coil has features which allow the device to be mounted either horizontally or vertically without loss of mechanical or thermal efficiency. The invention includes a frame comprising a pair of side panels which support the working mechanism, and upper and lower panels. A plurality of fixed partitions are attached between the upper and lower panels. A plurality of movable dampers are mounted on shafts and supported by linear ball bearings such that the movable dampers may selectively mate with the fixed partitions. A crank linkage is used to drive the movable dampers into and away from the fixed partitions. The elastic U-shaped structure of the movable dampers resiliently mates with the fixed partitions so as to form a substantially leak-proof seal around the heating tubes.

    • Apparatus for opening an open end of a pouch, an overwrap, or the like so as to facilitate the insertion of an object thereinto includes a number of processing stations, such as a storage station where a supply of pouches is stored and an opening station where an open end of a pouch transported thereto from the storage station is opened so as to receive an object. A transporting mechanism, which includes a suction-type gripper, transports a pouch from the storage station to the opening station and then from the opening station to another station, which may or may not be a processing station. The suction-type gripper of the transporting mechanism continuously grips a pouch throughout its movement from station to station. The opening station may be provided with its own pair of suction-type grippers which cooperate to open a pouch which has been transported to the opening station. Other processing stations include an inspection station for inspecting a pouch transferred from the opening station and a sealing station for sealing a properly filled pouch. The last station is an unloading station having its own suction-type gripper adapted to receive a sealed pouch which is handed off by the suction-type gripper of the transporting mechanism.
