    • A low-profile antenna includes a ground-plane element defining a ground plane and an elongated radiator element configured and disposed in relation to the ground plane to define a vertical loop when the ground plane is horizontally disposed. A substantial broad segment of the radiator element is parallel to the ground plane. One end of the radiator element is connected to the ground-plane element and another end of the radiator element having spaced-apart legs with feet is capacitively coupled to the ground-plane element by dielectric spacing elements that are disposed between the feet of the radiator element and the ground-plane element. A conductive-material layer contacts the feet between the feet and the dielectric spacing element. An exposed portion of the conductive-material layer that extends from beneath the feet of the radiator element includes removal tabs for enabling the capacitive coupling to be adjusted by removing at least some of the exposed tabs. The adjustable capacitive coupling and the dimensions and configuration of the radiator element are such as to enable the radiator element to resonate within an adjustable band of frequencies within a predetermined range of frequencies. A tuning circuit is coupled to the radiator element for selectively enabling the antenna to transmit signals at a first frequency within the adjustable frequency band or to receive signals at a second frequency within said band. The radiator element includes longitudinal folds distending from the sides of the substantial broad segment.

    • An antenna assembly, and an associated method, for a portable radio device, such as a mobile station. The antenna assembly includes a whip antenna transducer capable of translation between a retracted position and an extracted position. When positioned in the extracted position, a switch element interconnects the whip antenna transducer together with radio circuitry of the radio device. When positioned in a retracted position, the switch element, instead, connects the radio circuitry of the radio device to a non-movable antenna transducer, such as a patch or PIFA antenna transducer, housed within the housing of the radio device.

    • The invention provides a device for iontophoretically transporting a compound through a localized region of an individual's body tissue. The device comprises first and second iontophoretic electrodes, a reference electrode, a current source, and a monitoring means. The first electrode is placed in ion-conducting relation with the localized region to allow iontophoretic transport of a compound therethrough. The second and transport electrodes are each placed in contact with the individual's body tissue, and all electrodes are spaced apart from each other. The current source is electrically connected to the first and second electrodes and applies a current to the localized region of body tissue to effect iontophoretic transport. The monitoring means monitors the electrical resistance of the localized region by measuring any voltage difference between the reference electrode and the first and/or second electrodes. Methods for using a reference electrode to monitor and control iontophoresis are also provided.

    • A modular battery pack comprised of multiple modular batteries arranged in series, in parallel, or in series-parallel combinations is described. Each of the modular batteries is comprised of a first pair of opposed keyed side walls for series connection between adjacent modular batteries, and a second pair of opposed keyed side walls for parallel connection between adjacent modular batteries. The modular batteries are only able to connect to each other when the keys are matched and aligned. Additionally, the opposed end walls of the modular batteries have specifically configured terminals that prevent the possibility of making undesired connections between adjacent modular batteries.
