    • An information mirror system includes an interior rearview mirror assembly having an electro-optic transflective reflective element and a reconfigurable liquid crystal video display operable to display information. The video display is disposed in the mirror housing rearward of the transflective mirror reflector of the transflective reflective element, wherein information displayed by the video display is viewable by a driver of the equipped vehicle viewing through the transflective mirror reflector when the video display is displaying information. The rearview mirror assembly includes a microprocessor that controls dimming of the electro-optic transflective reflective element and that controls the video display. The information mirror system includes a forward facing camera that captures images through the windshield of the equipped vehicle. The forward facing camera is associated with a headlamp controller that, responsive to image processing of images captured by the forward facing camera, is operable to control the headlamps of the equipped vehicle.

    • A modular rearview mirror system includes a variable reflectance device having a reflectance surface, which reflects light incident the surface from a direction rearward of the vehicle. The variable reflectance device is responsive to a drive signal by dimming to a partial reflectance condition. A control for the reflectivity value of the variable reflectance device includes first and second light sensors and a circuit. The circuit is responsive to the light sensors to produce a drive signal as a function of the light levels to which the light sensors are exposed. The first and second light sensors are both aimed generally in a direction rearwardly of the vehicle. The first light sensor is aimed along a generally horizontal axis and the second light sensor is aimed along another axis that deviates from the horizontal axis. A preferable deviation between the axes is at least approximately 10 degrees, but not more than approximately 70 degrees. The light sensors may both be positioned behind the variable reflectance device within the mirror casing and may be aimed through the variable reflectance device and/or through a potion of the substrate thereof. The variable reflectance device is preferably an electrochromic mirror element but may also be a liquid crystal device, suspended particle device, or other known electro-optical device. The automatic rearview mirror system may be used as an exterior vehicle mirror, as a vehicle interior mirror, or as all three mirrors on a vehicle. The mirror system is particularly suited for use on automobiles, minivans, light trucks, small vans, and sport utility vehicles.

    • A rearview mirror system for a vehicle having a reflective element with a reflective surface and a variable light transmission element includes an optical display device behind the reflective element in order to produce a visual display to the driver. A control is provided having a light sensor that senses light conditions in the vicinity of the vehicle and produces a continuously variable light signal indicative of such sensed light conditions. The control further includes a drive circuit that is responsive to the light signal in order to supply a drive signal to the reflective element and thereby establish the light transmission level of the light transmission element. The control further includes an intensity control circuit that varies the intensity of the optical display as a function of the value of the sensed light in the vicinity of the vehicle in order to accommodate physiological changes in the driver's eyes. The intensity control circuit further varies the intensity of the optical display device as a function of the drive signal supplied to the reflective element in order to compensate for reduced light transmission levels of the light transmission element. The intensity control circuit sums values of the light signal and the drive signal and processes the sum to a pulse-width modulated signal using a non-linear processor. The intensity control also provides a substantially constant high intensity of the optical display device for all values of sensed light above a predetermined high light level and for all values of sensed light below a predetermined low light level.

The other portion of control may include a forward facing imaging array that is part of at least one of (a) a headlamp controller of the vehicle, (b) an object detection system of the vehicle, (c) a rain sensor of the vehicle and (d) a lane departure warning system of the vehicle.

The compass circuitry may be responsive to the compass sensor for determining a directional heading of the vehicle. The information display is operable to display the directional heading to the driver of equipped vehicle. The compass circuitry at least partially compensates for movement of the compass sensor caused by adjustment of the mirror housing.

The compass sensor is disposed within the mirror casing and has a first magnetoresponsive sensing element and a second magnetoresponsive sensing element. The control determines that the casing is adjusted by an occupant of the vehicle in response to a change in the first and second signals being indicative of an abrupt movement of the casing about the mounting structure by an occupant of the vehicle. The control is operable to enter a rapid compensating mode to compensate for the mirror adjustment.

    • An elecctrochromic system utilizes the benefit both from the continuous variability in transmission and memory in EC devices to provide a partial level of light transmission that is variable while minimizing energy usage. An electrochromic element that is responsive to a momentary application of a signal by coloring to a corresponding partial transmission level and maintaining at that level for a given period of time after removal of the drive signal, is provided with a drive signal. The drive signal has a value corresponding to a selected transmission level and is applied for a first predetermined period of time in order to color the electrochromic element to the selected transmission level and repetitively thereafter for the same or shorter periods of time. The subsequent periods are separated from each other and from the first period by holding periods of time during which the drive signal is not applied. A reset circuit resets the drive circuit to apply the changed value of the drive signal in response to changes in the selected light transmission level. An additional circuit may be provided that is responsive to the magnitude and/or rate of change of magnitude of the selected light transmission level in order to provide momentary overshoot of the drive signal level upon a change that increases the drive signal level and a momentary undershoot of the drive signal upon a change that decreases the drive signal level.
