摘要： A membrane cell for the electrolysis of aqueous salt solutions is provided in which the foraminous metal anode is enclosed in the membrane. Spacing means are provided to separate the portions coated with an electrocatalytically active material from the membrane. The spacing means may be a nonconducting material or the coated surface of the anode may be faced away from the membrane to permit the anode structure to serve as the spacing means. To provide a low cell voltage and permit efficient hydrogen gas release from the caustic solution, the cathode is spaced apart from the membrane.

摘要： A membrane cell for the electrolysis of aqueous salt solutions is provided in which the foraminous metal anode is enclosed in the membrane. 摘要： Apparatus is provided for securing a fabricated diaphragm to each of a section of electrodes. A diaphragm encloses each electrode and has an open end adjacent to the electrode plate. The apparatus comprises two bars, one positioned along a first side and one positioned along a third side of the electrode section. A plurality of elements are attached to each of the bars. The elements are positioned between adjacent electrodes and secure one edge of each of two adjacent diaphragms. The elements may be interconnected to provide additional sealing of the diaphragm. A rod is positioned along the second and fourth sides of the electrode section to seal the outer edge of the diaphragm enclosing the external electrodes of the section.The apparatus is employed in electrolytic diaphragm cells for producing chlorine and caustic soda by the electrolysis of alkali metal chloride solutions.A method is provided for employing the apparatus to effectively seal the diaphragm to the electrode section.

摘要： An alkaline cell having a flat housing, preferably of cuboid shape. The housing may be laser welded closed with a metal cover inserted as a part of an end cap assembly. A portion of an insulating seal may be held compressed between a sleeve extending from the metal cover and an anode current collector nail within the end cap assembly. The housing may include a vent mechanism, preferably a grooved vent, which can activate, when gas pressure within the cell reaches a threshold level typically between about 250 and 800 psig (1724×103 and 5515×103 pascal gage). The cell can have a supplemental laser welded vent which may activate at higher pressure levels.

摘要： An alkaline cell having a flat housing, preferably of cuboid shape. The cell can have an anode comprising zinc and a cathode comprising MnO2. The housing can have a relatively small overall thickness, typically between about 5 and 10 mm. Cell contents can be supplied through an open end in the housing and an end cap assembly inserted therein to seal the cell. The end cap assembly includes a vent mechanism which can activate, when gas pressure within the cell reaches a threshold level typically between about 100 and 300 psig (6.89×105 and 20.69×105 pascal gage). The cell can have primary and supplemental vent mechanisms such as welded or thinned regions on the surface of the housing which may activate at different pressure levels. The cathode can be formed of a plurality of stacked slabs having aligned hollow centers with an elongated opening for anode material to be inserted therein.

摘要： An improved positive terminal feedthru for a lithium/metal sulfide battery cell is provided which permits electrical access to the positive terminal of the battery cell from outside the case. The positive terminal feedthru assembly includes a first annular compressible seal which is provided about the positive feedthru and abuts the positive terminal. A first bushing is provided around the positive feedthru adjacent to the first compressible seal. A second annular compressible seal is provided about the positive feedthru between the first bushing and the battery case. A second annular bushing is provided about the positive feedthru adjacent the opposite side of the case from the second compressible seal. An annular washer is provided around the positive feedthru adjacent the second annular bushing. This washer maintains a compressive load on the first and second compressible seals to account for expansion and contraction due to temperature cycling.

摘要： An improved case is provided for a lithium/metal sulfide battery. The improved case is arranged such that the largest surface, corresponding to the side of a traditional cell case, is left open. The remaining five sides of the case can be formed in a drawn form from a single sheet of metal. The electrode plates can be provided within this drawn case and a cover can then be welded to the case to form the cell assembly. Utilizing the side of the cell case rather than the top of the cell case provides easier handling and installation of the electrode plates within the cell case.
