    • The present disclosure is a method for bridging requests for access to resources between requesters in a distributed network and an authenticator servicing the distributed network. The bridging mechanism has security features including a naming service for machine authentication and machine process rules to authorize what process machines can perform. The security proxy bridge intercepts an access request, and checks the IP address for machine authentication as well as the machine process rules and if both verifications are successful, the bridge then forwards the request for access to the authenticator. The security proxy framework utilizes a data structure that provides a method for storing selected security information stored as data records supporting an authentication and authorization system for users to access resources on multiple components of a distributed network supporting multiple business units of an enterprise. Primary authentication information stored herein includes general user information, security information, and contact information.

    • Apparatus and method providing improved fault tolerance through redundancy of hardware and software suitable for use in a head-end of an interactive information distribution system. Communications between each of a head-end controllers and each of the server modules are coincidentally sent along at least two signal paths to provide to additional fault tolerance in the event one of the signal paths becomes inoperable. In one embodiment, a video switch comprises a plurality of I/O ports coupled between a plurality of server modules and a plurality of subscriber equipment for transferring video information between the server and the subscriber equipment. A primary and secondary switch controller are each coupled to the head-end controllers and the plurality of I/O ports. The primary switch controller is used for routing data packets containing said video information between the plurality of I/O ports. The secondary switch controller monitors status of the primary switch controller and I/O ports, and initiates a switchover event in an instance where the primary switch controller exhibits a failure.

    • A flexible microwave antenna assembly for a surgical ablation instrument is capable of conforming to a tissue surface for ablation thereof. The ablation instrument includes a transmission line having a proximal portion suitable for connection to an electromagnetic energy source, and includes a flexible antenna coupled to the transmission line for radially generating an electric field sufficiently strong to cause tissue ablation. A flexible shield device is coupled to the antenna to substantially shield a surrounding area of the antenna from the electric field radially generated therefrom while permitting a majority of the field to be directed generally in a predetermined direction. A flexible insulator is disposed between the shield device and the antenna to define a window portion enabling the transmission of the directed electric field in the predetermined direction. The antenna, the shield device and the insulator are formed for selective manipulative bending thereof, as a unit, into contact positions that generally conform the window portion to the biological tissue surface to be ablated.

    • Methods and systems for matching the communication protocol of a calling device with one of a plurality of communication protocols supported by an answering device are provided. Initially, a predetermined amount of data is received and buffered in a memory component. Following, an analysis is performed to match the received data with one of the communication protocols supported by the answering device. Communication protocols that can be detected and matched include, for example, the V.110, V.120 and ISDN protocols. During the buffering and analyzing steps, a predetermined data pattern such as mark idle can be transmitted to the calling device. Thereafter, the answering device is configured to answer the call according to the protocol matched in the analyzing step. A timer can be utilized to limit the period for matching to a predetermined length, after which time the answering device can be configured to answer the call in analog mode.
