    • Methods and systems are provided for a wireless terminal to select a control channel from a plurality of channels provided on a plurality of respective operating frequencies in which a first group of the operating frequencies are first scanned to locate a control channel that satisfies a first set of selection criteria. During this scan, channels are identified that fail to satisfy the first set of selection criteria but that have an increased probability of satisfying a second set of selection criteria. If a channel that satisfies the first set of selection criteria is not located during the first scan, the wireless terminal determines an order in which a second group of operating frequencies are to be scanned based on the identified channels, and then scans the second group of operating frequencies in the determined order to locate a control channel that satisfies the second set of selection criteria.

    • A method of controlling a mobile terminal allows it to search for possibly higher priority service providers in response to receiving an indication that more than the default number of service providers is available in a given service area, without dropping its current radio channel. When only the standard number of service providers is available in a given area, the mobile terminal uses standard frequency bands and corresponding radio channel allocations during scanning operations. When more than the standard number of service providers is available, the mobile terminal uses received information defining the non-standard spectrum allocation supporting the available service providers in its scanning operations. In a wireless communication system operating in accordance with TIA/EIA-136 standards, the mobile terminal may scan its current hyperband, alternate hyperband, or both the current and the alternate hyperbands (e.g., 800 MHz and 1900 MHz hyperbands), for higher priority service providers.

    • Disclosed herein is the method of operating a cellular mobile station to identify a suitable cellular control channel for entering a camping state with a highest priority cellular service provider, based on data stored in the cellular mobile station, that is preferred to a current cellular control channel the mobile station is camping on. The method comprising the steps of: (a) measuring received signal strength of a plurality of available cellular control channels; (b) attempting to lock onto the available cellular control channels having highest signal strength; (c) determining if a locked onto cellular control channel is a highest priority cellular control channel and, if so, then camping on that cellular control channel, and otherwise returning to camping on the current control channel; and (d) periodically interrupting any of steps (a)-(c) to receive control data from the current cellular control channel and then returning to the interrupted step.
