    • An image detector for bank notes is provided which can be made at low cost and in small size. The image detector comprises a pair of detector units 13 includes a first image detection sensor 24 which detects an image of a first detection area mounted on one side of a detector unit 18, a first light emitting device 27 which irradiates light towards the first detection area, and a second light emitting device 31 which irradiates light towards a second detection area mounted on one side of the unit main body 18 but in a different location from the first detection area, a pair of detector units is disposed so as to oppose one another across a bank note transportation path 12, in a manner which enables the image detection sensor 24 of one of the detection units 13 to detect an image of the second detection area of the other of the detection units 13.

    • An object is to provide an image detector for bank notes which enables the cost to be lowered. Accordingly this has: a light emitting device 31 (31X) which is arranged facing an image detection sensor 24 (24X), and which irradiates light of a plurality of different wavelengths ranges towards a bank note on a bank note transportation path 12, and detects light of the light which has transmitted through the bank note with an image detection sensor 24 (24X); a light emitting device 27 (27X) which is provided on the same side as the image detection sensor 24 (24X), which irradiates light of a plurality of different wavelengths ranges towards a bank note S, and detects light of the light which is reflected from the bank note with the image detection sensor 24 (24X); an image detection sensor 24 (24Y) provided on the opposite side to the image detection sensor 24 (24X); and a third light emitting device 27 (27Y) provided on the same side as the second image detection sensor 24 (24Y), which irradiates light of a plurality of different wavelength ranges towards the bank note S, and detects light of the light which is reflected from the bank note S with the image detection image detection sensor 24 (24Y).

    • A coin discriminating apparatus includes a light source for emitting light toward one surface of a coin being transported, a reflected light sensor for receiving light emitted from the light source and reflected by the coin, light emitting elements disposed downstream of the light source for emitting light toward the one surface of the coin being transported, a sensor for photoelectrically receiving light emitted from the light emitting elements and reflected by the one surface of the coin and producing image pattern data of the one surface of the coin, a memory for storing reference data of coins of each denomination, a first denomination discriminator for calculating coin diameter based on the image pattern data of the one surface of the coin produced by the sensor, comparing it with reference diameter data of coins of each denomination stored in the memory and tentatively determining the denomination of the coin, a second denomination discriminator for reading reference pattern data of coins of the denomination determined by the first denomination discriminator from the memory, comparing the reference pattern data with the image pattern data of the one surface of the coin and finally determining the denomination of the coin, and a received light amount controller for controlling an amount of light reflected by the one surface of the coin to be detected by the sensor in accordance with an amount of light reflected by the coin and detected by the reflected light sensor. According to the thus constituted coin discriminating apparatus, it is possible to discriminate whether or not coins are acceptable and the denominations of coins with high accuracy by optically detecting the surface patterns of coins.

    • A coin discriminating apparatus includes a light emitter for illuminating the surface of a coin, a light receiver for receiving reflected light from the surface of the coin and producing pattern data of the coin, a pattern data memory for storing the pattern data of the coin produced by the light receiver, a reference data memory for storing reference pattern data of each denomination, a magnetic sensor for detecting a material of the coin, a first discriminator for determining the denomination of the coin based on the material of the coin detected by the sensor, a second discriminator for determining the denomination of the coin based on the diameter of the coin, a denomination discriminator for determining the denomination of the coin based on the determined results by the first and second discriminators, a data comparator for reading reference pattern data corresponding to the denomination of the coin stored in the reference data memory based on the determined result by the denomination discriminator and comparing the pattern data stored in the pattern data memory, thereby determining the denomination of the coin. According to the thus constituted coin discriminating apparatus, it is possible to discriminate coins with high accuracy and at high speed.

According to this apparatus for detecting the thickness of sheets, it is possible to detect the thickness of sheets with high accuracy and this apparatus is particularly suitable for detecting double feed of bills and bills counterfeited by use of adhesive tape.

    • A coin discriminating apparatus includes a plurality of light emitting elements for projecting light onto a coin, a light receiver for optically detecting light reflected by the coin, and a scattering member, disposed on an opposite side of the coin from a light receiver, for scattering light emitted from the plurality of light emitting elements. The light receiver receives light reflected by the coin and light scattered by the scattering member and produces pattern data. The coin discriminating apparatus further includes a coin discriminator for detecting a diameter of the coin based on the pattern data produced by the light receiver, tentatively determining a denomination of the coin, and comparing the pattern data of the coin produced by the light receiver with reference pattern data of a coin of the tentatively determined denomination. It is therefore possible to discriminate coins with high accuracy by optically detecting the pattern of obverse or reverse surfaces of the coins, even if dust and the like adhere to the side surfaces of the coins.
