    • An image detector for bank notes is provided which can be made at low cost and in small size. The image detector comprises a pair of detector units 13 includes a first image detection sensor 24 which detects an image of a first detection area mounted on one side of a detector unit 18, a first light emitting device 27 which irradiates light towards the first detection area, and a second light emitting device 31 which irradiates light towards a second detection area mounted on one side of the unit main body 18 but in a different location from the first detection area, a pair of detector units is disposed so as to oppose one another across a bank note transportation path 12, in a manner which enables the image detection sensor 24 of one of the detection units 13 to detect an image of the second detection area of the other of the detection units 13.

A variable resistor member is further provided for varying the voltage applied to the current source and at least one fixed resistor member is selectively connected in parallel with the variable resistor member for dividing the voltage, varied by the variable resistor member, at a predetermined ratio.

    • A deterioration sensing device comprises a laser diode (LD), a voltage-current converter supplying electric current to the LD to radiate a laser beam which is received by a photo-diode, and an APC circuit outputting electric voltage in accordance with the intensity of the laser beam sensed by the photo-diode. The voltage-current converter is controlled based on the electric voltage so that the intensity of the laser beam is kept constant. An LD deterioration circuit is provided with a comparator, in which the electric voltage is compared with a reference voltage. An LD deterioration control unit is provided in the LD deterioration circuit to output a deterioration signal when the electric voltage becomes higher than the reference voltage, so that an alarm, indicating that the LD has deteriorated, is output, and the electric current supplied to the LD is decreased.
