    • Fixing belt is brought into pressure-contact with the surface of fixing roller such that fixing belt rotates according to rotation of fixing roller, thereby forming, between fixing belt and fixing roller, fixing nip portion through which recording sheets pass. A pressing area of an opposing surface of pressing member contacting the surface of fixing roller via fixing belt is smaller in each end portion of the opposing surface in the axis direction of fixing roller than in a central portion of the opposing surface in the axis direction of fixing roller. This makes speed of conveying recording sheets faster in each edge portion in the width direction perpendicular to a recording sheet conveyance direction than in a central portion in the width direction. Thus, creases of recording sheets can be prevented while a recording sheet passes through fixing nip portion between fixing roller and fixing belt mutually brought into pressure-contact.

    • A belt-type fixing device is provided that achieves reduction in time required between start of rotation of a fixing belt upon reception of print starting signal in printing-standby status and recovery of a specified fixation temperature in a fixing nip.The belt-type fixing device of the invention has an endless-sheet-like fixing belt to be heated, a nip forming member positioned inside the fixing belt, a rotatable pressurizing roller which is in pressure contact with the nip forming member with the fixing belt interposed between and in which part in contact with the fixing belt forms a fixing nip, and a heater lamp for heating the fixing belt which lamp is provided in a position inside the fixing belt and away from the fixing nip, and the fixing nip is in a position higher than the heater lamp.

    • A fixing device for an image forming apparatus having low heat losses. The fixing device consists of a fixing roller and a compression roller for abutting upon it under pressure. The fixing roller and compression roller have a release layer each formed on the surface of a core metal formed of an aluminum hollow cylinder. The release layer on the surface of the fixing roller is formed of a composite material of metallic powder of good thermal conductive material such as nickel, and fluorine resin such as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and polyphenylene alkoxyether (PFA), and has spectral emissivity at a wavelength of 5 to 10 .mu.m being within a range of 0.1 to 0.65. The compression roller is provided with a release layer formed of fluorine resin like the conventional one, or the same material as the release layer on the surface of the aforesaid fixing roller, having lower spectral emissivity.
