    • The invention relates to a data transmission method in a wireless data transmission system where signals with one or more data rates and quality levels are transmitted simultaneously. In order for it to be possible to transmit information on the radio path at different rates and quality requirements, the transmitter according to the invention comprises forward error correction coders (206, 208) for carrying out outer coding for at least some of the signals to be transmitted so that all the signals to be transmitted have a common quality level, a multiplexer (214) for combining the signals to be transmitted into frames having a given length, a forward error correction coder (220) for carrying out inner coding for the frames to be transmitted, and a mechanism (222) for repeating or deleting symbols in each frame, if necessary, so that the length of the symbols or each frame equals that of a multifold of a time interval that is known and essentially shorter than the symbol length. The transmitter according to the invention further comprises control logic (254) for adjusting the transmitting power used during transmission of each frame proportionally to the number of symbols each frame had prior to symbol repetition.

    • In a communication system in which data and user information are transmitted on a radio path between a transmitting end and a receiving end, multirate coding and detection are carried out by: allocating different signal waveforms to different transfer rates, selecting, at the transmitting end, the data transfer rate to be used on the radio path for transferring user information, selecting, at the transmitting end, the signal waveform to be used on the radio path according to the selected transfer rate, transmitting the user information with the selected transfer rate and the selected signal waveform to the receiving end, the signal waveform indicating the selected data transfer rate, detecting, at the receiving end, the signal waveform used on the radio path, selecting, at the receiving end, a transfer rate corresponding with the detected signal waveform, and adapting reception to the selected transfer rate.

    • The invention relates to a radio system and a method of timing an interfrequency handover in a WCDMA cellular radio system where data transmission between a terminal equipment and a base station employs several adjacent alternative frequency bands, and which comprises several different base stations the coverage areas of which overlap at least partly, the base stations utilizing frequency band groups that differ from one another and that are situated next to one another in the frequency range, in which system a terminal equipment communicates with a first base station on a first frequency band and measures the strength of a first signal it has received from the base station, and wherein the terminal equipment measures the strength of a second signal transmitted by a second base station on a second, adjacent frequency band. In order to perform a handover at a correct moment, the terminal equipment compares the measurement results of the first and the second signal, and if the second signal exceeds the first signal by a given threshold value, the terminal equipment signals a handover request to the first base station.
