    • Jitter of an overlay display with respect to the primary display of a television receiver is avoided by assuring that the vertical and horizontal blanking signal components are sufficiently time spaced by preventing the number of clock pulses occurring between the horizontal and vertical components of the blanking signal from going below a selected number. The number of clock pulses between the negative going transition of the vertical blanking signal and the positive going transition of the first horizontal blanking signal is tracked and when the number of pulses fails to exceed a reference value the number of pulses is changed to effectively shift the transitions with respect to one another.

    • A control system for a portable display device includes a battery power supply powering a display panel of the portable display device, a backlight controller and a video processor connected to the display panel for displaying images, an adaptive controller providing output signals to the backlight controller and the video processor, a video analyzer providing a first input to the adaptive controller, and a remaining display time estimator providing a second input to the adaptive controller, wherein the remaining display time estimator determines a remaining display time of the portable display device and controls the adaptive controller to adjust one of the backlight controller and the video processor based upon the determined remaining display time.

    • PLL apparatus for generating an oscillatory signal phase locked to a component of a further signal comprises a variable oscillator for generating the oscillatory signal and a source of the further signal. A phase detector responsive to the oscillatory signal and to the component of the further signal, provides a phase error signal which is coupled to the variable oscillator via a limiter. Circuit means are provided for controlling the limiting level of the limiter. The dual limiting substantially improves the loop noise tolerance and reduces the loop sensitivity to occasional phase reversals of the component of the further signal. Additional enhancements to loop stability and noise immunity are provided by an unlock detector which detects and totalizes phase rotations in a selected area of a phase plane and by a phase wrap detector which maintains a lock indication during phase angle wrapping.

    • In apparatus including a number of functional elements coupled to a common supply bus, certain of the elements may draw time varying supply current related to signal being processed. Supply current compensation circuitry responsive to signal processed by such elements is included to draw equal and opposite time varying supply current to maintain the total supply current constant and thereby to limit localized supply potentials variation. Exemplary compensation circuitry for an amplifier includes a transistor coupled between the supply busses and controlled by signal potential from the amplifier to draw supply current proportional to the signal applied to the amplifier, which supply current is opposite in phase to supply current drawn by the amplifier.
