    • In video tape recording apparatus composite video signals are separated into their luminance and chrominance components for processing prior to recording. The luminance components are digitized, adaptively temporal and spatial filtered, and folded into a reduced frequency spectrum to generate a digital signal that is converted to analog form to modulate the frequency of the luminance carrier signal used in video tape recording. The chrominance components are converted to the color-under signals used in video tape recording. In video tape playback apparatus the color-under signals are converted up in frequency to provide chrominance components for inclusion in reproduced composite video signals. Also, in the video tape playback apparatus, the frequency modulation of the luminance carrier signal is detected to recover folded luminance signals which are digitized, time-base-corrected, unfolded, and adaptively temporal and spatial filtered to suppress aliases associated with unfolding to generate a digital signal that is converted to analog form to provide luminance components for inclusion in reproduced composite video signals. The backward compatability of the video tape recordings when playing them back in video tape playback apparatus already in the field is accommodated by de-emphasizing the high frequencies of the luma during recording. The high frequencies of the luma can be re-emphasized during playback to maintain substantially full NTSC or PAL luminance bandwidth.

    • A digital communication system includes a data encoder responsive to a digital data stream for forming sequential data blocks from the digital data stream which are representative of information to be communicated. A synchronization data encoder responsive to the digital data stream, generates sequential sync blocks including synchronization data which are related to the sequential data blocks, as well as a prescribed digital sequence. A multiplexor responsive to the sequential data blocks and the sequential sync blocks, combines the blocks in an alternating manner so as to form a block-coded information signal. A modulator responsive to the block-coded information signal, provides a modulated block-coded information signal to a communication channel. A communication channel receiver includes a synchronization data recovery circuit responsive to the modulated block-coded information signal for detecting the prescribed digital sequence and providing at an output a reference signal in response to the detection. A demodulator responsive to the modulated block-coded information signal and the reference signal provided by the synchronization data recovery circuit demodulates the modulated block-coded information signal. Furthermore, a pre-demodulator phase-adjusting circuit is also responsive to the reference signal for adjusting the phase of the modulated block-coded information signal before its demodulation.

    • An encoder separates luminance and chrominance signal components of a composite video signal. The frame-to-frame changes in the luminance signal are detected, and a motion signal is derived therefrom. The higher frequency portion of the luminance signal is adaptively de-emphasized in amplitude and folded into the spectrum of the lower frequency portion of the luminance signal, to generate a folded-spectrum luminance signal for modulating the frequency of a luma carrier. In a combined signal, suitable for magnetic recording in accordance with a modified VHS standard, the chrominance signal is translated in frequency to generate a color-under signal in a frequency band below that occupied by the FM luma carrier. The de-emphasized higher frequency portion of the luminance signal, as folded into its lower frequency portion, and encoding of the motion signal onto vacant portions of the frequency band below that occupied by the FM luma carrier in such a magnetic recording facilitate its being compatibly reproduced by conventional VHS reproduction devices. In a wideband reproduction device a decoder demodulates the folded-spectrum luminance signal from the FM luma carrier, unfolds the lumininance signal, and reemphasizes the high frequencies of the unfolded luminance signal. The color-under signal is translated in frequency to regenerate chrominance signal combined with the unfolded luminance signal with its high frequencies re-emphasized to their original amplitude, regenerating a composite signal descriptive of a full bandwidth image. The motion signal is utilized in the encoder for motion-adaptively pre-filtering the input luminance and is recovered in the decoder for motion-adaptively post-filtering the unfolded luminance.

    • A magnetic tape recording with a new signal encoding format, apparatus for recording this format and reproducing apparatus for reproducing signals from this format. A standard VHS signal is recorded as a first set of parallel slant tracks having a predetermined spacing between each slant track. A high definition television signal is recorded in pairs of slant tracks of a second type that flank a slant track of the first type and are narrower in width than the slant track of the first type they flank. Additionally, the azimuth angle of the tracks of the first type alternates between different predetermined values for successive tracks, and the azimuth angle of the tracks of the second type differ both from the azimuth angle of the tracks of the first type which they flank, and from the azimuth angle of the tracks of the second type which are positioned next to them in the space between tracks of the first type. This format allows one tape to record both a high definition television signal and a standard VHS signal, which standard VHS signal can be played back using ordinary tape machines. Accordingly, this format provides a way to avoid the problem of having to carry a dual inventory of tapes in a tape sales or rental business.
