    • A method and apparatus for effecting the completion of non-vertical, including horizontally disposed, portions of a deviated well bore traversing a production formation. To facilitate the insertion of a gravel packing tool string through the curved portion of the well bore, stabilizer elements are maintained in a radially retracted position and then operated to engage the well bore after the tool string is run-in. An anti-rotation tool may be incorporated for connecting the work string to the left hand threads conventionally provided on a conventional packer in order to permit rotation of the entire tool string to facilitate passage through the curved portion of the well bore. Two gravel packing modifications are disclosed, the one employing a single packer and a cross-over tool located at the top end of a plurality of serially connected screens. In the other modification, a plurality of gravel packing sections, including stabilizers, screens, a sleeve valve housing and a packer are serially connected together and run-in. A cross-over tool is then inserted by a separate tubular work string to be initially positioned adjacent the lowermost packer to accomplish the packing of the lowermost screens and then moved to the next packer to successively effect the gravel packing of all of the gravel packing sections.

    • A method and apparatus are provided for use on a subterranean well gravel packing conduit. The apparatus incorporates a cylindrically shaped inner tubular member having an interior wall and an exterior wall. A fluid flow passageway is defined within the interior wall of the tubular member and fluid flow passage means extends from the interior of the tubular member through the exterior wall and communicates with the fluid flow passageway. In a preferred embodiment, an outer fluid-porous means, or particulate restricting means is carried around the exterior wall of the tubular member having its interior facing the tubular member. Wire mesh means are disposed between the exterior wall of the tubular member and the interior of the particulate-restricting means, and passing across the fluid flow passage means, with fluid flow openings therethrough, to enable fluid passing through the particulate restricting means and the wire mesh means to be filtered to prevent solids of a predeterminable size from passing into the fluid flow passage means, to the top of the well. The device may be utilized in a number of well completion hook-ups, such as in non-vertical completion apparatuses and methods.

    • A method of making a screen for downhole use uses mesh screen layers that are diffusion bonded to each other. The ends that will overlap to make a seam when the sheets that are attached together are rolled into a tube are compressed before the tube shape is created or thereafter when the tube shape and an inner base pipe are drawn through a die to join the seam made by the overlapping edges. Because of the compression of the edges, when they overlap to form a tube the wall thickness at the overlap is about the same as the remaining thickness of the screen portion. Optionally, a resilient material can be compressed into the open areas of the screen portions that will be overlapped to make the generally longitudinally oriented seam. The seam can be parallel to the screen axis or spiral around it. The outer perforated shroud provides a compressive force that maintains a barrier resistant to flow of sand particles between the seam overlapping surfaces as the outer perforated shroud, filtration tube and inner base pipe assembly is drawn through a die.

    • A firing mechanism for a downhole perforating gun comprises two cooperating housing sections having closed end walls in abutment. The lower housing section contains a booster charge and the primer cord for firing the gun. The upper housing section contains a detonatable primer, a hammer, and a downwardly directed explosive charge positioned between the primer and the bottom end wall of the upper housing. The upper housing is secured to the lower housing by a collet latch which, if firing of the gun does not occur, can be released by the exertion of a substantial upward force on a fishing neck provided in the assemblage of the upper housing. The defective elements can then be repaired or replaced, the upper housing reinserted in the well by wireline, and latched into an operative position with respect to the lower housing to permit another attempt to fire the perforating gun.

    • A well perforating gun assembly includes a perforating gun secured to the bottom of a tubular actuating housing containing a fluid pressure actuated hammer and a fixedly mounted primer against which the firing means is impacted. A latch normally maintains the firing means in an elevated position with respect to the primer but such latch may be released through the application of sufficient fluid pressure force to the firing means to drive it into engagement with the primer. If the primer fails to ignite, a second fluid pressure force is employed to move the firing means to its original latched position, ready for a second application of fluid pressure to release the firing means and again impact the primer.

    • A device and system for controlling fluid flow into a wellbore tubular may include a flow path in a production control device and at least one in-flow control element along the flow path. A media in the in-flow control element adjusts a cross-sectional flow area of the flow path by interacting with water. The media may be an inorganic solid, a water swellable polymer, or ion exchange resin beads. A method for controlling a fluid flow into a wellbore tubular may include conveying the fluid via a flow path from the formation into a flow bore of the wellbore; and adjusting a cross-sectional flow area of at least a portion of the flow path using a media that interacts with water. The method may include calibrating the media to permit a predetermined amount of flow across the media after interacts with water.
