    • A delay time measurement method for ultrasound of the type wherein a testing head transmits an excitation pulse that is as close as possible to the shape of a shock wave and traverses a pretravel path until it reaches the object to be examined which has a front wall and a rear wall, with at least one reflected pulse being generated at its front wall as well as at its rear wall. To improve the above-mentioned type method so that delay time measurements for thickness determinations and abnormalities can be performed reliably even on rough surfaces and if reflected pulses are missing or falsified, a time window is determined for the recording of reflected pulses that follow the excitation pulse, within which window all successive reflected pulses are digitized. Then the reflected pulses that lie within the time window are digitally filtered and parametrized, and the filtered and parametrized reflected pulses are fed to a computer unit and are evaluated on the basis of variable criteria using a predetermined algorithm.

    • A method for reducing ultrasound data from an ultrasound signal includes rectifying the ultrasound signal and generating an envelope curve about maximum values of the rectified ultrasound signal. Each ultrasound pulse is represented as a curve portion with a single maximum value. A first negative envelope curve signal, which is reduced by a first factor f, and a delayed envelope curve signal, which is not modified but is delayed by a time period td, are produced. The first negative envelope curve signal and the delayed envelope curve signal are added to form a first sum signal with a first zero crossing, wherein the first zero crossing represents a first time value. An amplitude is associated with the first time value, the amplitude corresponding to a signal height consistent with a maximum peak height from the envelope curve within a time interval about the first time value.

    • A method for reducing digital data of an electro magnetic acoustic transducer pig that travels through a pipeline so as to detect defects by measuring an analog ultrasonic echo includes determining a size of a defect and determining a background noise at the defect. The size of the defect is determined by selecting peak values of the digital data based on a plurality of amplitude/transit time vectors indicating maxima of an ultrasound envelope, each vector being determined by three amplitude/transit time pairs. The ultrasound envelope is generated by determining a width of a respective vector ultrasound envelope for each vector. The background noise at the defect is determined by summing peak values of the digital data in time intervals so as to form an interval-specific summation value.
