    • A lift arm is pivotally supported between its upper and lower ends on the outer ends of a pair of horizontal support rails. The support rails slide beneath the body of the refuse collection vehicle across its width. A pair of opposing refuse container grippers are mounted on a carriage that reciprocates along the length of the lift arm to a curved upper portion for dumping refuse from the container into a hopper section of body. The opposite sides of the curved upper portion of the lift arm are pivotally connected to the vehicle body adjacent the hopper section. A hydraulic piston and cylinder drive assembly is mounted between the horizontal rails beneath the vehicle body for extending and retracting the lift arm from the side of the body. The lower end of the lift arm follows a curvilinear or arcuate path during extension and retraction. The upper end of the lift arm does not extend when its lower end is extended so that refuse is always dumped at the same position relative to the hopper section of the vehicle body regardless of the amount of extension of the lift arm.

    • A hollow refuse storage body having a longitudinal axis is configured for mounting on a truck chassis. The body has a forward hopper section and a rear section with an open rear end. A tailgate is mounted to the rear section of the refuse storage body and is moveable between closed and open positions to seal and unseal the open rear end of the rear section of the refuse storage body. A hollow box-like load eject blade is mounted within the refuse storage body for reciprocating movement along the longitudinal axis along a bottom floor of the refuse storage body. A hollow box-like packer blade is mounted within the refuse storage body for reciprocating movement along the longitudinal axis overlapping an upper surface of the eject blade. A pair of single stage hydraulic cylinders are coupled in crisscross fashion between the refuse storage body and the packer blade for moving the packer blade over a first range of travel. The packer blade is moved rearwardly and forwardly in the hopper section and underneath a divider wall of the refuse storage body which prevents spring back of refuse. This permits the packer blade to repetitively push refuse periodically dumped into the hopper section of the refuse storage body and compact the refuse into the rear section of the refuse storage body. A multi-stage hydraulic cylinder is coupled between the refuse storage body and the eject blade for moving the eject blade over a second much greater range of travel. This permits the eject blade to push trash that has been compacted in the rear section of the refuse storage body by the packer blade out the open rear end of the rear section of the refuse storage body when the tailgate has been moved to its open position.

    • This invention relates, in one embodiment, to a refuse handling device having an elongated frustro-conical body of uniform octagonal cross-section with a loading opening and a spaced discharge opening. There is disclosed a compactor having a two-part compacting platen adapted to guide refuse entering the body through the upper loading opening into a position to be acted upon by the lower part of the compacting platen and capable of longitudinal movement within the body. The body is pivotally mounted on a chassis and is capable of pivoting upwardly away from the chassis to dump refuse contained in the body out through the discharge opening. An alternate embodiment of the invention in a side loading refuse handling device is also disclosed.
