    • A saw blade clamping arrangement particularly for power reciprocating saws and similar tools having a reciprocating shaft connected to a cutting member includes a locking member and a locating pin which cooperates to prevent inadvertent removal of the saw blade. The saw blade clamping arrangement further includes a support member carried by the drive shaft for movement therewith. The support member at least partially defines a longitudinal slot for receiving the saw blade. The locating pin extends into the longitudinal slot and is adapted for partial insertion into the aperture from a first side of the saw blade. The locking member, which in the preferred embodiment is a spherical bearing, is operative for selectively engaging the saw blade with the drive shaft. The locking member is movable to a locking position in which the locking member is partially inserted into the aperture from a second side of the saw blade.

    • A saw blade clamping arrangement particularly for power reciprocating saws and similar tools having a reciprocating shaft connected to a cutting member includes a biasing member preferably in the form of a spring clamp member. The biasing member is interconnected with the drive shaft and operative for providing a biasing force to retain the cutting member in operative connection with the drive shaft. A release lever is pivotally mounted to a housing of the saw for movement between first and second position. In the first position the release lever is spaced apart from the biasing member. In the second position the release lever engages the biasing member and opposes the biasing force of the biasing member to permit quick and easy removal and replacement of the saw blade. The spring clamp member biases the saw blade into operative engagement with the drive shaft. In a second preferred embodiment, the spring clamp member biases a locking member into engagement with the saw blade. In a third preferred embodiment, the release lever is operative for linearly translating a control member which in turn selectively urges a locking member into engagement with the saw blade.

    • A compound miter saw includes a table on which a workpiece is placed, a miter saw unit supporting a saw blade, and a housing pivotally supporting the miter saw unit related to the table in such a manner that the miter saws unit is at least laterally pivotable. Further, the miter saw includes a bevel mechanism for selectively determining the lateral position of the miter saw unit at any of a plurality of pivoted positions, including a vertical position where the saw blade is positioned substantially vertically relative to the table, and leftward and rightward pivoted positions where the blade is inclined laterally leftwardly and laterally rightwardly from the vertical position. The bevel mechanism includes a movable rod and three fixed stop members, the rod being operable to move between a first rod position abutting one of the fixed stop members and a second rod position not abutting the one of the fixed stop members so as to permit the lateral pivotal movement of the miter saw unit. The first fixed stop member is disposed so that the rod abuts the first fixed stop member when the miter saw unit is at the vertical position. Similarly, the second fixed stop member is disposed so that the rod abuts the second fixed stop member when the miter saw unit is leftwardly pivoted at a first predetermined angle from the vertical position. Further, the third fixed stop member is disposed so that the rod abuts the third fixed stop member when the miter saw unit is rightwardly pivoted at a second predetermined angle from the vertical position.

    • A portable, reversibly driven power tool (11) comprises a reversible motor and an assembly (17) for electrically switching the direction of motor rotation and/or for shifting the commutator brushes (99, 101) for optimizing motor performance in both the forward and reverse directions. Assembly (17) includes a reversing switch (56) and an actuator (19) which is movable between forward and reverse positions for reversing the connections of the reversing switch (56) to reverse the direction of motor rotation. Actuator (19) includes (a) a sleeve (81) connected to the reversing (56) switch and surrounding the motor stator (43) to guide movement of the actuator (19) between the forward and reverse positions and (b) a manual control tab (85) ergonomically located in the motor housing (23) slightly forward of a manual power switch (21) in the tool handle (35). The commutator brushes (99, 101) and the rotatable contacts (61, 63) for the reversing switch (56) are preferably supported on a common support (67 ) and are movable thereon responsive to the movement of the actuator (19) between the forward and reverse positions. Assembly (17) provides a strong, compact construction for electrically switching the direction of motor rotation and/or shifting of commutator brushes (99, 101), an ergonomically preferred remote manual actuator tab (85), easy assembly and a reliable construction.
