摘要： The invention concerns a digital radio (2) for pseudo-duplex radio communication, and a method of transmission time mediation for pseudo-duplex radio communication.A digital radio (2) is in time division duplex communication with a second digital radio (4). The digital radio (2) derives a source signal activity parameter (VAD) indicating the likelihood of there being a source signal for transmission by the digital radio (2) to the second digital radio (4) over a single radio channel. The digital radio (2) also derives a first value (VADDir1) of a signal direction parameter (VADDir) in dependence on both the value of the signal activity parameter (VAD) for the digital radio (2) and a second value (VADDir2) of the signal direction parameter (VADDir) received from the second digital radio (4);The digital radio (2) selects the proportions of time for transmission and reception over the single radio channel in dependence on the first value (VADDir1) of the signal direction parameter (VADDir). The digital radio (2) also transmits the first value (VADDir1) of the signal direction parameter (VADDir) to the second digital radio (4), to allow the second digital radio (4) to perform an analogous update of its value of the signal direction parameter (VADDir).The apparatus and method of the invention are robust to radio channel and VAD value imperfections.

A digital radio (2) is in time division duplex communication with a second digital radio (4) over a single radio channel. Control of the radio channel may reside with either radio. However, authority for a radio to change the frame format in order to increase the proportion of time for which it transmits always resides entirely with the radio currently transmitting the least per frame. This arrangement allows rapid response to a need for a radio to move from listening to speaking mode, thereby reducing speech clipping. When the digital radio (2) and the second digital radio (4) are transmitting for equal proportions of the frame, authority to change the frame format passes to the radio that is transmitting at that instant. The apparatus and method of the invention provide rapid switching of transmission mode, with minimal speech clipping when a user of the radio (2) starts to speak.

摘要： A method is disclosed for determining current channel state information in a communications system having a first communications unit communicating to a second communications unit, wherein the first communications unit sends a channel sounding packet (32) to the second communications unit. The channel sounding packet (32) is sent a time period, t, prior to the transmission of a signal by the second communications unit to the first communications unit. The second communications unit receives the channel sounding packet (46) and processes the channel sounding packet to determine at least one channel characteristic. In response to receiving the channel sounding packet (46) the second communications unit appends frame code information (48) to the signal to be transmitted from the second communications unit to the first communications unit, to inform the first communications unit of the communications parameters that have been optimized.

The controller (20) operates the signal reception means (20, 24, 28) for a first period during a transmit interrupt frame, whereby if the signal reception means detects valid return signalling during the first period, then the controller (20) extends operation of the signal reception means for a further second period, and if the signal reception means does not detect valid return signalling during the first period, then the controller (20) terminates operation of the signal reception means at the end of the first period and re-commences transmission of the digital radio signal by the signal transmission means.
