    • An apparatus which can transmit torque between the crankshaft or the camshaft of a combustion engine and the input shaft of a variable-speed transmission in the power train of a motor vehicle employs a damper having a rotary input member normally receiving torque from the engine, an output member rotatable with and relative to the input member and normally transmitting torque to the transmission, and a set of arcuate coil springs which yieldably oppose angular movements of the input and output members relative to each other with a first force which increases in response to increasing angular movements of the input and output members relative to each other and with a second force which is generated by centrifugal force and increases in response to increasing RPM of the engine. At least one additional spring is provided to oppose angular movements of the input and output members relative to each other (particularly when the vehicle is coasting) with a third force which increases in response to increasing angular movement of the input and output members relative to each other but is at least substantially independent of the centrifugal force.

    • A torsional vibration damper has primary and secondary masses rotatable with and relative to each other about a common axis, and a torsionally elastic damper which opposes rotation of the masses relative to each other and operates in series with a torque limiting device. The latter comprises a pair of ring-shaped lateral members flanking a ring-shaped intermediate member which can stress the energy storing elements of the torsionally elastic damper. One of the lateral members is a prestressed diaphragm spring which is riveted to the other lateral member. The maximum torque which can be transmitted by the torque limiting device is greater than the maximum torque which can be transmitted by a friction clutch between the secondary mass and the transmission of a motor vehicle. The primary mass can receive torque from the engine of the vehicle.

    • A multiple-component torque transmitting apparatus for attachment to the crankshaft of an engine is assembled by: (a) moving the pressure plate of an assembled friction clutch by a force applying device axially in a first direction toward a clutch housing and against the bias of a clutch spring with a force exceeding the operating point of the clutch spring, (b) measuring the magnitude of the force and the distance which is covered by the pressure plate and/or one or more portions of the spring and generating corresponding signals, (c) jointly moving the housing and the pressure plate axially in a second direction counter to the first direction and with a force exceeding the operating point and generating corresponding signals, (d) relaxing the force upon the clutch, (e) processing the signals into a further signal denoting the desired or optimum operating point of the clutch spring, (f) moving the clutch and a flywheel against each other until the bias of the spring reaches the calculated operating point, and (g) fixing the housing to the flywheel.

    • A hydrokinetic torque converter has a rotary housing which is connectable to the crankshaft or camshaft of a combustion engine in a motor vehicle to drive the input shaft of the transmission. The housing confines a turbine, a pump, a stator (if necessary) and a lockup clutch between a radially extending wall of the housing and the turbine. A piston of the lockup clutch is movable in the axial direction of the housing and defines a first fluid-filled compartment with the turbine as well as a second fluid-filled compartment with the wall of the housing. The force which is required to engage, to partially disengage or to fully disengage the lockup clutch is reduced by the provision of one or more profiles on the piston and/or on a friction disc of the lockup clutch which extends or extend into the adjacent compartment or compartments to influence the speed of circulation of fluids in the respective compartments and/or the fluid pressures acting upon opposite sides of the piston. This enables a control unit to predictably and reliably change the condition of the lockup clutch (from engaged to partially engaged (slipping) to fully disengaged or in the opposite direction) in response to relatively small changes of fluid pressure in the first or in the second compartment.

    • Apparatus for damping torsional vibrations in the power train of a motor vehicle has a first flywheel which defines an annular chamber for a supply of viscous fluid medium and carries one sealing device of a composite seal for separation of the chamber from the atmosphere. A second flywheel carries an antifriction bearing and the second sealing device of the composite seal. The first flywheel and the first sealing device form component parts of a first subassembly. The second flywheel, the second sealing device and the bearing form parts of a second subassembly. The two subassemblies are connected to each other in that the inner race of the bearing is slipped onto a cylindrical seat on an axial protuberance of the first flywheel and is retained on the protuberance of a ring which is affixed to the protuberance and overlies the inner race of the bearing. A torque-transmitting coupling between the second flywheel and the flange-like output member of a single damper or of two parallel-connected dampers in the chamber becomes operative in automatic response to attachment of the two subassemblies to each other.
