    • The invention provides a method for adjusting the calibration of a tracked ultrasound device using the measured difference between two sets of fiducial markings in two relative positions of a tracker and an scan head of the device. The invention also provides a trackable ultrasound device that enables repeatable attachment of a tracker to a scan head, thus preserving an initial calibration between the tracker and the scan head. Furthermore, the invention provides a calibration jig that can be used to repeatably attach a tracker to an ultrasound scan head or to measure the difference between two relative positions of a tracker and a scan head.

    • The invention provides an image-guided medical instrument that utilizes a tracking device to track the location of at least a portion of the instrument on at least one image of a patient's anatomy. The instrument may include a handle having an operating element, an elongated flexible body member connected to the handle, wherein the body member includes a lumen, a transmission element housed within the lumen of the body member, and a treatment apparatus connected to end of the transmission element, wherein actuation of the operating element actuates the treatment apparatus via the transmission element. The body member also includes at least one sensor element that is utilized by the tracking device to determine position information regarding the treatment apparatus that is used to display the location of the treatment apparatus on the at least one image of the patient's anatomy.

    • An apparatus having an insertable portion for holding a position sensor is disclosed. The position sensor can transmit a signal indicative of its position with respect to a field generator. The insertable portion of the catheter has fiducial markings that are detectable by an imaging modality when the insertable portion is inserted into the anatomical body. The fiducial markings are asymmetrical about at least a first axis of the insertable portion. After the insertable portion has been inserted into the anatomical body, the fiducial markings can be detected to facilitate registration of the position sensor held in the insertable portion to the anatomical body. The apparatus also has a fixing mechanism for releasably fixing the insertable portion to the anatomical body. The non-symmetrical fiducial markings facilitate unambiguous registration of the insertable portion to the anatomical body. When the insertable portion is inserted into the anatomical body to a location of interest, the fixing mechanism substantially rigidly fixes the insertable portion of the catheter to a part of the anatomical body near the location of interest.

    • Systems and methods for providing access to a target site. Example systems can include a needle and a grid to guide the needle. One system includes a plate with an aperture, a member coupled to the plate and including a semispherical surface, and a hub slideably coupled to the plate by a guide. The system can also include a lock mechanism configured to lock the hub relative to the plate on the guide, and a needle coupled to the hub, the needle including a magnetically trackable sensor positioned in a tip of the needle. The semispherical surface of the member can be positioned against skin of a body and the hub slid relative to the plate along the guide to insert the needle through the aperture in the plate into the body until the tip reaches a target site. The hub can be locked by the lock mechanism when the tip of the needle reaches the target site, and an ablation agent is delivered to the target site through the needle, or a tissue sample is obtained.
