    • Disclosed herein is a marine propulsion device comprising a lower unit including a gearcase, a driveshaft having an end extending into the gearcase, a pinion mounted on the end of the driveshaft, a propeller shaft bearing housing located within the gearcase having a forward end adjacent the pinion, a propeller shaft rotatably mounted in the propeller shaft bearing housing and having a rear end portion and a portion forwardly of the rear end portion, a propeller mounted on the rear end of the propeller shaft, a bevel gear adjacent the forward end of the propeller shaft bearing housing and engaging the pinion, the bevel gear including an annular forwardly facing thrust transferring surface, and an annular thrust transferring element mounted on the propeller shaft bearing housing and engageable with the annular forwardly facing thrust transferring surface so as to transfer thrust forwardly from the bevel gear through the thrust transferring element and to the propeller shaft bearing housing.

    • A steering apparatus for a marine craft has a first bracket connectable to the stern of the marine craft. There is a second bracket connectable to the propulsion unit of the marine craft. The second bracket is rotatably connected to the first bracket for relative rotation about an axis of rotation. The propulsion unit can be rotated about the axis of rotation relative to the stern of the craft. The second bracket has a cylindrical bore extending therethrough. A piston is reciprocatingly received within the bore. The piston slidingly engages the bore and has a piston rod connected thereto. The piston rod is operatively connected to the propulsion unit. In an alternative embodiment a cable replaces the piston and is slidably received by a cable tube extending through end fittings in the bore.

    • A two-speed transmission (30) with reverse gearing for a watercraft (10). The transmission is disposed in the gimbal housing (25) passing through the transom (14) of the watercraft. A pair of planetary gears (46,80) share a common ring gear (40) to provide both forward-reverse and first-second gearing in a very compact package. The transmission housing may be formed in two portions, a first housing (32) containing the forward-reverse gear mechanisms and a second housing (62) containing the first-second gear mechanism. The transmission output shaft (64) is connected to the drive shaft (122) of a vertical drive unit (24) by a double universal joint (74) that may be replaced without disassembling the transmission components.

    • The outboard motor includes an engine driving a propeller. The engine cover includes an upper dome-like cover sealingly connected to a lower pan-like cover. A combustion air opening through the upper portion of said upper cover has a partition inside the opening requiring entering air to travel upwardly into a chamber between a baffle between the inside of the upper cover and the cover. The baffle includes a portion cooperating with the cover to define a downwardly directed duct leading air towards said lower cover clear of the engine. The engine draws combustion air from the region of the lower pan to a higher elevation at the front of the cover while entrained water is deposited in the lower cover a pump discharges the water.
