    • A terminal position housing (34, 134) is used with an alignment plate (42, 142) to align male terminals or blades (12, 112) extending from a printed circuit board assembly (6, 106). A plug connector (14, 114) having multiple female terminals or receptacles (16, 116) is mated to the blades (12, 112) with the assistance of the terminal position housing (34, 134) and the alignment plate (42, 142). The terminal position housing (34, 134) includes a stationary plate (36, 136) having apertures (38, 138) through which the blades (12, 112) are inserted. The stationary plate apertures (38, 138) are aligned with apertures (44, 144) in the movable alignment plate (42, 142), and these aligned apertures keep the blades (12, 112) aligned with the receptacles (16, 116) even if the blades (12, 112) may be deflected due to forces applied by mechanical assist members, such as bolts (96).

    • High density electrical interconnections are established by using an electrical connector comprising a plurality of terminals held in position by resilient housing latches and by a separate terminal position assurance insert which is formed as part of a one-piece member also having a connector position assurance insert. The terminals position assurance insert is inserted into the housing from the rear and abuts a projection on each terminal thus assuring that the resilient housing latch engages the terminal. A connector position assurance insert attached to the terminal position by a integral strap is inserted beneath a connector latch to prevent the depression of the latch. A strap is deformed so that the connector position assurance insert is located parallel to and adjacent to the terminal position assurance insert when the two are fully seated in the connector. The terminal position assurance insert is inserted immediately adjacent a side wall of the connector housing on which the connector latch is mounted and above a wire crimp and insulation barrel portion to the rear of the projecting section of the terminal. Both the terminal position assurance insert and the connector position assurance insert include laterally deflectable latching springs for retention in the housing.

    • A shielded and filtered electrical connector (2) includes surface mount capacitors (52) positioned in engagement with contact terminals (4) on the rear face (18) of a connector housing (10). A cylindrical electrically conductive member (36) having an elastomeric core (38) with a conductive laminate layer (42) on the exterior of a film (40) surrounding the elastomeric core (38) engages conductive ends (54) of each chip capacitor to urge it into contact with a corresponding contact terminal (4). The resilient electrically conductive member (36) is located in a central lateral channel (20) on the rear housing face (18) and the chip components (52) are located in pockets (24) between the channel (20) and corresponding terminals (4). The resilient electrically conductive member (36) and the chip components (52) are inserted using conventional pick and place techniques. A shield or ground member (26) surrounds the housing and the sides of the shield (26) trap the ends of the resilient electrically conductive member (36) to form a stable connection.

    • An apparatus and method for filtering and grounding individual electrical circuits in an electrical connector is disclosed. The electrical connector is based on standard configurations, such as a printed circuit board header 10 having a standard footprint. A filtering subassembly includes a programmable filter printed circuit board 16 to which surface mount components 56, 66 are soldered. Printed circuit board terminals, such as right angle printed circuit board pins 14 are inserted in plated through holes 38 and electrical connection is established intermediate the ends of the terminals. A solderless compliant pin section 30 can be used. Capacitors 56 can be selectively used to filter certain individual circuits or lines and zero value resistors 66 can be used to ground other lines. These surface mount components are preferable loaded using programmable pick and place equipment and are soldered between pin surface mount pads 44 and adjacent grounded surface mount pads 46. The grounded pads are commoned to a shield layer 52 on one side of the printed circuit board and a peripheral ground strip 40 on the other side so that the board can be mounted in two opposite orientations.
