摘要： A method of melting metal scrap in a molten melting media, the method comprising (a) providing a source of molten melting media in a furnace, the melting media in the furnace having a first surface level; (b) providing a first melting bay in fluid communication with the furnace to receive molten melting media from the furnace to provide a body of molten melting media in the first melting bay for purposes of melting floatable metal scrap, the first melting bay having: (i) a bottom; and (ii) an outer wall connected to the bottom defining the first melting bay, the outer wall having a generally spiral shaped cross section terminating in a mouth of a channel for removing melting media and molten scrap to an adjacent bay, the spiral shaped cross section receding away from a generally central axis of the first melting bay.

The working surface of the ramp between the first and second edges is concave. The inner column includes an end wall disposed opposite the chamber base, the end wall includes rounded inner and outer edges.

摘要： A preheat charging system for preheating scrap metal prior to delivery to a melting furnace. The system includes a preheating station having a heating chamber adapted to receive scrap metal. Hot gas from a burner chamber is circulated around the scrap metal. The burner chamber is adapted to receive exhaust gas from a hot exhaust gas source such as a melting furnace. A burner apparatus is mounted within the burner chamber in a flow path of an exhaust inlet port. The burner is configured to supply supplemental heat on demand to the heating chamber to supplement the hot exhaust gas. A first fan can be provided to direct exhaust air from a furnace to the burner chamber. A second fan can be provided for directing air into the burner apparatus.

摘要： A molten metal pump having an elongated shaft with an impeller disposed adjacent the end of the shaft and a means for rotating the shaft. The impeller is formed with an imperforate substantially circular base surrounded by a bearing and has a surface facing toward the shaft. At least two imperforate vanes are connected to and extend substantially perpendicular from the surface and radially from the shaft or a hub securing the shaft toward a peripheral portion of the base. The vanes are spaced apart at terminal inlet ends along their entire radial dimension to create an inlet area comprised of the axial opening between adjacent vanes at the terminal ends and an outlet area comprised of a radial opening between adjacent vanes along the axial direction of the vanes. Each vane has a leading edge with a distal portion adjacent the periphery of the base portion which forms an angle of less than about 100.degree. relative to a tangent to said circular base drawn at the center of the vane.
