摘要： A method for implanting a biopsy marker at a biopsy site within bodily tissue is disclosed. A marker applier is provided which has a marker cannula for receiving the biopsy marker. The marker cannula has a lateral marker window, and the marker is positioned at the window for ejection therefrom. The marker applier also has an ejector rod moveable longitudinally in the marker cannula which, when actuated, forces the ejection of the biopsy marker from the marker cannula through the window and into the tissue. The marker applier is inserted into a biopsy cannula positioned at the biopsy site. The biopsy cannula also has a lateral window, and it is necessary to orient the lateral marker window into alignment with the lateral biopsy window. Upon proper orientation, the ejector rod is actuated, and the biopsy marker is ejected from the marker cannula for implantation in the tissue in a direction substantially perpendicularly to the longitudinal movement of the ejector rod. This method is particularly useful for implantation of a marker at a breast biopsy site to mark the location of the breast biopsy during and after the biopsy procedure.

摘要： Mechanisms for altering the shape of a cell or chamber of a shaft or an actuation drive of an instrument are provided. The mechanisms may selectively rigidize the shaft of surgical or diagnostic instruments. The shaft assembly includes a shaft operatively connectable to a control member, at least one cell or a set of cells defined within the shaft, a shape altering material contained within the cell or cells, and, an activation link operatively connectable to a source of activation energy for delivering activation energy to each cell for activating the shape altering material to selectively rigidize or unrigidize the shaft. An actuator for producing work is also provided that includes an element within a housing that defines a cell or a set of cells. The shape altering material is contained within the cells, and a source of activation energy operatively connected to each cell for activating the shape altering material to expand or contract the cell. The element is operatively connectable to a driving member of an instrument such that the change in the cell is translated to the driving member to facilitate the production of work.

摘要： Methods and devices are provided for activating brown adipose tissue (BAT) with light. Generally, the methods and devices can activate BAT to increase thermogenesis, e.g., increase heat production in the patient, which over time can lead to weight loss and/or improved metabolic function. In one embodiment, a medical device is provided that activates BAT by using light to stimulate nerves that activate the BAT and/or to stimulate brown adipocytes directly, thereby increasing thermogenesis in the BAT and inducing weight loss and/or improved metabolic function through energy expenditure. The light can be configured to directly or indirectly stimulate the nerves and/or the brown adipocytes. The light can be configured to indirectly stimulate the nerves and/or the brown adipocytes by activating a light activatable medium administered to a patient and configured to respond to the light to cause activation of the brown adipose tissue.

摘要： Expanding or foaming adhesives are used to reduce the stomach volume to reduce the caloric intake and weight of a patient. A web structure is attached inside the stomach and an expanding or foaming adhesive is applied to the web structure. The expanding or foaming adhesive attaches to the web structure and to the stomach to partition the stomach. The partition barrier divides the stomach volume into a reduced volume available for food storage and an empty volume that the food cannot enter. The reduced volume enables the patient to feel full faster and reduce caloric intake. A passageway can be provided between the two volumes near the base of the stomach to allow food or fluids to exit from the empty volume.

摘要： Methods and devices create an intestinal braking effect, are non-invasive or minimally invasive, and may be reversible. These methods and devices may be accomplished via stabilized implantable systems and ingestible pills. In one aspect, a method of inducing satiety includes implanting an implant within a lumen of a gastrointestinal tract and retaining a portion of chyme that flows by the implant within a body of the implant. The method further involves re-releasing the retained chyme from the implant into the gastrointestinal tract at a predetermined rate slower than a rate caused by natural peristalsis.
